o El Dorado Hot Spring is forty miles West of Phoenix, Arizona. In April, 1996, Camilla & Bill purchased land with a 1,200 gallon per minute subterranean hot spring of odorless, tasteless mineral water, heated by Mother Nature. Dry camping on site, and commercial campgrounds nearby. They also welcome TNS and AANR cards. Singles-friendly. Visit the site for additional information.
o Fossil Creek. This jewel, every pun intended, was brought to us by friends we have not yet met, Jan & Mark (last names to be known) of "WANDERLUST" magazine, 2720 Pickering Dr, Marshalltown, Ia, 50158. We haven't heard from them for a while, but they've done lots of exploring in the Southwest and all the information they've provided has proven to be spot on accurate... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Gillard Hot Spring Report. 2005. In southeast Arizona where many hot springs are located, is Gillard Hot Spring, by far the hottest in the state at 184 degrees; the second hottest one is 149 degrees. Located in a deep canyon on the Gila River at 3,500 feet elevation, the scenery at Gillard is to die for. Access to Gillard is extremely difficult for two reasons: 1. The area leading into it is a confusing maze of old mining roads, criss crossing and looping back on each other making reliable directions difficult to both obtain and give. Verily, it took us three tries to find our way in there... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Grand Canyon Report. 2005. About thirty of us (guys and gals) did a seven day clothing optional raft trip down the Colorado River, in the Grand Canyon (national park). The guides were, um, very tolerant. There are some fun pix on the rafts, as well as the shore. The water was about 50 degrees and the air temperature was about 100 degrees. Quite a contrast when trying to cool off. We had a BLAST... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Hot Well Dunes. At an elevation of 3,100 feet, Hot Well Dunes is another Hotel California Hot Spring--it can be heaven or it can be hell, depending. Usually, it's the former during the week and the latter on weekends/vacations, but it can be great weekend evenings, sometimes. It can also change drastically minute by minute; there's just no telling. Why? Because Hot Well Dunes (see also 283SHEEP) is CLASSIC example of bureaucratic obtuseness and the finely honed adroitness and alacrity at wasting taxpayers' $ to create a nightmare that the government is known for. Had he known about it, Senator William Proxmire's Golden Fleece Award would surely have been conferred on Hot Well Dunes... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Kaiser Warm Spring Report. 2006. Directions: From Burrow Creek Campground, take Hwy 93 north 5.5 miles to Kaiser Wash Bridge. Park well off the pavement just north of the bridge and head southwest down the canyon for 1.5 miles to the spring. One may also take the turnoff north of the bridge and go under the bridge for nice shaded parking and walk down the canyon. If one has a high clearance 4WD vehicle, go north to Signal Road to turn around and head back south. 0.1 miles south of MM 134 (about a quarter mile north of the bridge) go right (southwest) over the cattle guard and follow the dirt track. Take the second left at 0.3 miles and go 0.9 miles to the canyon. Walk down the canyon to the right 0.7 miles to the spring. Report: The soaking pool at Kaiser Warm Spring is now about three feet lower than the wonderful cement pool and shade structure that was swept away by incredible flooding last winter. The whole canyon has been scoured out; what a scene! It is now utterly impossible to drive but a short way down the canyon. I parked at the edge and walked; there had been recent flooding too and it didn't seem like a good idea to leave the beloved 4WD Geo Tracker in the canyon. Odorless and tasteless natural mineral water at about 100 degrees bubbles up through the sandy canyon floor. The four person volunteer built stone and sand pool is about fifteen inches deep and averages in the mid 90's depending on air temperature and wind speed. 150 yards farther down the canyon, cold Burro Creek flows most of the year. Large pink and yellow boulders beckon sunbathers. Nude soaking and hiking (when it's warm enough) are the only sensible choice. Free nude camping anywhere in the area, but don't camp on the floor of the canyon if there's any chance of precipitation anywhere in the area. o Magic Circle. Quartzsite, Arizona. Recognized by The Naturist Society and is on the BLM's (Bureau of Land Management) Laposa South Long Term Visitor Area. The Magic Circle is on public land, has been used as nude for 11 years with signage, the ranger station will give directions to our nude area, we don't charge anyone but the BLM does. We have potluck's each month, outings to hot springs, to restaurants, to landed nudist resorts and then there is all the things to do in Quartzsite and surrounding area. The fee for use of the area and the trash and sewer dump and water station is $20 per week or $150 for the season (6mo) and is paid to the BLM, we don't charge anything but do accept donations to help defray the cost of signage and handouts giving visitors news of upcoming events, potlucks, bonfires, gatherings by clubs, visits to hot springs, etc. Since there is no shoreline we have to completely surround our area with signs warning of nude sunbathing and we MUST remain in our area while nude, and not climb on top of our RV's nude. Other than that we have a good relationship with the rangers and last year there wasn't one complaint registered with the rangers. There is lots to do in the area and Quartzsite has the worlds biggest flea-market ever, along with the gem & mineral shows in Jan & Feb. Directions: From Quartzsite, Az go south on highway 95 to mile marker 102 and watch on the left for the ranger station for the La Posa south Long Term Visitor area (LTV). That is where you will pay for your sticker and can get directions to the nude area, but after getting your sticker you can just continue on the paved road and then on the dirt road and watch for the American & TNS flags on the right. Don't try to go any further without stopping at the flags and seeing Mayor Jim. We have had several RV's stuck in the wash because they didn't get directions on where to go from the mayor's flags. Also the mayor will give you a flyer with news of the upcoming events. No website at the current time. Email Dick for additional information. Additional contacts: (Summer months: James Helsel HCR 33 Box33965 Ely, Nv. 89301). (Winter months: James Helsel Box 1045 Quartzsite, Az 85346) The phone numbers are (land line in summer 775-591-0422) and (cell phone number all year 602-538-3751) Jim has two hearing aids but doesn't always hear the cell phone.
o Mira Vista resort in Tucson, Arizona. May 2007. I just spent 3 great days at Mira Vista resort in Tucson, meeting a great couple who didn't mind a single hanging out with them. On Wednesday we were the only 3 people there although several day-users joined us during the days, but my Thursday there were quite a few more people there, both singles and couples. The resort has a great staff starting with Patty who fills in for the owner Jan on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while Jan went out of her way to make me comfortable. Their cook/bartender Girard (sp!) is a great cook and very personable. Everyone else I dealt with were great as well. The rooms are old but nice. My Standard room was big enough for 1 or 2 people but the Deluxe rooms were really nice! Room number 31 allows you to get the sun from the 6 a.m. sunrise early, perfect for your morning coffee! And at 65 degree's at that time of the morning it was quite comfortable to "coffee" in the nude. Nice pool and pool area with a great shade pavillion to allow you to get out of the burning sun. It's easy to get to while being not too far out of town. I don't know if the $90.00/night price is in line with other resorts around the country but it was worth paying. It was my very first Resort experience, and I couldn't have asked for a better one! Thanks Dael for the report.
o Mira Vista Resort Report. May 2006. The new Mira Vista resort in Marana, Arizona is a small and intimate facility. Mira Vista opened for business during the first week of May 2006. I was on-site on May 9 during the second week of business. Located in the desert about two miles south of I-10 and north of Tucson about 23 miles, the resort is a pleasant respite for the clothing-optional crowd. Unlike almost all nude and clothing optional resorts, currently Mira Vista does not have a gate. The entry road is a 1/4 mile in length from the surface road. The resort comprises 30 acres. Mira Vista is a partnership of Laguna Del Sol, DeAnza Springs, and Paradise Lakes. Historically, the main building encompasses an original stagecoach way station from the 1800s. The original bathtub is ensconced in a fixture next to the wall. The air conditioning in the main area was fine and operational as I was there in Mid-May and the outside temperature was over 100 degrees F (38 C). A small restaurant is located in the main building. The restaurant is only open from Thursday - Monday, currently. Also included is a lounging area. All the buildings, rooms, and accommodations have been redecorated and upgraded over the past year. The pool is of average size for a small resort, approximately 40’ by 18’. Next to the pool is a large "Ramada" or covered area providing shade and respite from the sun. The ramada will be used for gatherings, BBQs, parties etc. The ramada is especially nice in the evening. There are 17 rooms which are large by comparison to hotel rooms. A separate shower and bathroom accommodations are also on-site for day guests. A well furnished sport/gym room is in an airconditioned building. In another building is a Yoga studio, quite large with mirrors and natural wood flooring. Could be used as a dance studio, also. A nice tennis court and hot tub were isolated from the swimming pool area offering introspection without noise or interference. All the grounds are well manicured in the desert motif typical of southern Arizona. As a new resort, there might be some limitations. However, the club already signed over 75 members in the first two weeks of operation. The current manager was the former owner of the site before selling to the consortium listed above. His pride in his facility is obvious. Although new to nudism and clothing optional lifestyle, he seemed well versed in proper nudist educate. I was asked for my AANR card and registration was typical of any AANR or TNS affiliated facility. Mira Vista is a clothing-optional facility in Arizona with plenty of room for physical activity, pampering, relaxation, and meditative enlightenment. I look forward to spending more time on-site with my wife. This report is brought to you by 'COguy'. You can find him on the message board with the same name/alias.
o Mira Vista Resort Report. 2006. Some folks have asked for a report about Mira Vista and this one is happily given. Everything about Mira Vista, which means "Beautiful View" in Spanish, lives up to that name. Watching the sun set over nearby mountains and seeing the soft glow of the moon on adjacent Safford Peak was both inspiring and soothing. Mira Vista not only feels and looks like a home run, it's a home run with the bases loaded! Located only minutes off I-10, in Marana, Aridzone, Mira Vista is as easy to reach as it could be while still being away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Tucson. One of the things that makes Mira Vista unique among Naturenude venues is that it's owned by a team of experienced nudist park owners; Dave & Helen Landman (Dave was the one who "found" the property), owners of DeAnza Springs in Jacumba, California, which, with more than 500 acres is one of the largest parks in the country; Suzanne & Wayne Schell, owners of Laguna del Sol in Wilton, California, one of the most luxurious nude resorts in the US; and Becky & Joe Lettelleir, owners of Paradise Valley in Dawsonville, Georgia and Paradise Lakes in Land 'O Lakes, Florida, the club with the most members of any in the world. Another unique feature is that Mira Vista and all the other resorts named above will offer an Ultimate Membership to full members. The Ultimate Membership entitles the holder to up to 45 days at each of the other resorts. But let's return to the front desk where one is greeted by pleasant and informative Jan Pitts. Jan lives nearby and is a practicing nudist, so she knows how to make guests arriving for a clothes free or clothing optional experience feel comfortable with her warm personal charm and her extensive knowledge of the area. After the sign-in process is completed, Jan takes guests on a tour of the grounds, regaling them with bits of the extensive history of the place while showing them the inviting restaurant, the sitting room, the gift shop, and the fully equipped and air conditioned exercise room which will soon be complimented by a large new spa building. If you're a day visitor, your tour ends at the perfectly heated pool which is large enough to swim laps and if you're staying overnight, your tour ends at your room. The pool area has many comfortable chaise lounges, some in the sun and some in partial shade, but it also has a huge shaded cabana for those wishing to be outside but not in the sun. A lovely waterfall flows and lulls poolside loungers to sleep. At night, lights make the whole area a fantasy land. There is free ice water and showers and toilets just off to the side. The hot tub is in a huge stone arched structure entwined with plants. It's well shaded but at night, enough moonlight and starlight come in to make it a special experience. The temperature is just perfect for those hot days -- refreshing, but not too warm. The temperature is also adjusted according to the season of the year, with it being warmer in winter and cooler in summer, part of the fine tuning for guest comfort that Mira Vista is all about. Natural desert plants, including dozens of giant saguaro cacti are all over the grounds at Mira Vista, adding to the southwest ambiance. There is plenty of parking, including for large RV's (hookups and dump station to be added) of which there were four during this visit. Because vegetative and topographical screening makes Mira Vista it's own private island, even though it's very close to the city, one has the feeling of being just far enough out in the country. One of the most impressive things about Mira Vista is the restaurant, currently open Thursday through Monday for three meals daily. The food and service rate as the best of the best of any naturist park. Karen Beck and Gerard Convie make up a team that not only makes guests feel welcome, but also leaves them well fed from an eclectic variety of perfectly prepared and warmly served dishes. A full beverage license enables guests to enjoy their favorite libation, ranging from an unclothed diet coke to a Naked Captain Morgan. Karen and Gerard create such a warm atmosphere, it's impossible to even think about putting on clothes to eat elsewhere. All windows from the restaurant also afford a wonderful view of the mountains and surrounding countryside. Karin and Gerard are part and parcel of the warm feelings at Mira Vista where, it's happy to report, 100% of the guests were enjoying the superb facilities the nude and natural way. Keith Bradkowski is the General Manager of Mira Vista and he's ever watchful, always making sure things run smoothly, be it skimming the pool to keep it crystal clear, greeting incoming guests and making them feel at home, or answering the phone in a warm voice that makes one want to reserve a room without even having seen the place. He has a way of making guests feel welcome that's appreciated very much. Nude hiking opportunities abound outside of Marana and Tucson. There are several primitive nude friendly hot springs not far away, as well as commercial and dreamy Potters Aztec Baths, basic Essence Of Tranquility, and super clean Kachina Mineral Baths. Even more nude friendly is El Dorado Hot Springs in Tonopah with a separate nude only community area, as well as lodging, camping, and therapeutic massage. Shangri La Nudist Park offering full RV and resort services is conveniently located only 2.5 hours away from Mira Vista, 35 miles north of Phoenix in New River. Inquire for more information. Stay tuned for news on planned condos and an RV park. Mira Vista is going nowhere but up! Mira Vista Nudist Resort, 7501 N Wade Road, Tucson, Arizona 85743. o Palm Canyon and Kofa National Wildlife Refuge Report. December 2006. Palm Canyon is in Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, created to protect the largest herd of bighorn desert sheep on this continent. The canyon is also home to rare native fan palms, leftovers surviving in a micro climate that's existed from millennia ago when the area was wetter and cooler; the trees receive less than two hours of sun daily and less than six inches of rain yearly, yet they're thriving in a tiny side canyon a hundred feet off the main canyon floor. The (clothed) climb up to them is very strenuous, but worth it to find more than two dozen mature palm trees with trunk diameters of 20 inches or more existing on subterranean (more like sub rock) water in a barren wasteland... o Potters Aztec Baths, Arizona, Report. This is the ultimate getaway or a scenic or historic adventure without compare. With scenery to die for in the San Francisco River Canyon, not far downriver from incomparable Sundial Hot Springs in New Mexico, Potters Aztec Baths B&B in the Aridzone is a 104 year old, completely restored mansion, on the National Register Of Historic Places, with an 84 year old host who was born in the mansion who will prepare a Mexican or American breakfast for your party and share it with you, all the while regaling guests with tales of a bygone era, rich in history. Many of the working appliances and furniture are also very old. In all the naturnude experiences we've had, there's nothing like this one. If one has a large RV, it's bet to leave it at the Clifton RV park on the flatlands less than a mile away from Potters Aztec Baths; the road down into the mansion is suitable only for vehicles up to, say 25 feet... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Sabino Canyon Near Tucson. Deep in Tucson's Sacred Sabino Canyon, "GO NAKED" was written in the sand in foot high letters at one of the several small beaches. It's axiomatic we were in our natural element. A planned trip to nearby Tanque Verde (pronounced "Ton-ka Verd-a") Falls had been postponed because the falls are "often bone dry" as WORLD GUIDE, p. 10 advises. Nearby 3,300 ft. elevation Sabino was a logical alternative. We took the $5/person tram to the end, stop 9, ensuring that we knew when the last tram out was leaving, since we didn't want to walk the nearly five miles back. Disembarking, we asked the driver for directions to the creek; she must have decided we were Naturists by looking at our gear and promptly lied with a straight face, directing us to the wrong place... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Saddle Mountain Nude Hiking, Arizona. December 2006. We had a nice nude hike yesterday on the south side of Saddle Mountain and found some really interesting petroglyphs. Most interesting of all, we found a single rock which not only had a nice petroglyph on it, but it also had a grinding slick on top, A grinding slick was used by Native Americans to grind grain much the same way a metate was, only it was on a flat surface instead of in a hole. There were also a few other petroglyphs around. Photos available on request. Folks frequently ask where a good nude hike can be found and this one is a winner. One could hike nude for more than 10 miles amidst stunning scenery and probably never see another person. If we had seen other people, we would have stayed nude in that remote location. Naturally, after the hike, we went back to El Dorado Hot Springs in Tonopah, Arizona ( www.el-dorado.com) for a nice relaxing soak. Directions: From I-10 Exit 94 at Tonopah, Arizona, take 411th Avenue south for 3 miles. Turn right (west) on Buckeye Salome Highway and go for three miles or so to MM 41.5; the numbers are going down, so the turn is 0.5 miles after MM 42. Turn left on a dirt track and follow it 2.5 miles to the end, bearing left at the first intersection and right at the second. Walk west, following the closed road and after crossing the third large wash, trails lead right toward the mountain and the saddle that cleaves it, hence it's name. About 150 yards away from the old road, on the trail leading toward the saddle, the last wash that one crossed on the way in comes in on the right, angling toward the trail. The grinding slick and petroglyphs are right near the edge of the wash. High clearance only and 4wd recommended. If one doesn't have a high clearance vehicle, simply park any place off the road and walk. Farther up the trail into the saddle, there's a water catchment and if one is really lucky, one might spot the big horn sheep which live in the area. Other interesting local sites which can be hiked to nude include the largest and deepest pair of metates we've ever seen and a natural stone arch. o Shangri La II Resort Report. September 2006. I have put off going to the nude ranch for a long time but today was my first. So nice - swimming nude as required by the signs and living that way for the day. Not very busy during the week but the office said on weekends it's very busy -would like to be there then. So many to look at as there are all ages & sizes. From very hairy to clean. During the week the cafe is closed but Fri, Sat. & Sun its open. Warm enough for the pool and all the sunning you want. It's great for all. Thanks Arizguy for the report.
o Sheep Bridge Warm Spring Report. 2005. It's another world at Sheep Bridge, a stark world, a beautiful world. It was like no place we'd been = 38 miles of dirt road with more than a dozen river and stream crossings, thousands of birds, breathtaking scenery, lots of cattle, and an occasional mountain goat. The flora varied from mile high mountain plants to desert scrub. It was also about one of the least friendly places we've been; we saw far more people than we'd ever expect to see in such a remote place, but the only ones who were at all friendly were obviously like us--one group of three tourista types, visiting for the day. To a number, the more than dozen other people either completely ignored us or gave only perfunctory acknowledgment to our happy greetings. We hope it's only that they didn't want `outsiders' to negatively affect their paradise and not something else... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Verde Hot Springs Report. 2005. A good example of an area where the wonderful waters flow at several temperatures, Verde is THE spring of choice for many. Besides offering pools from 104 down to 98 degrees, Verde even has small indoor soaking pools and a cave with a nice 104 degree pool. The outdoor pool is up to six feet deep--great! Native Americans, knowing the healing powers of the magic waters maintained a sanitarium there for a long time, originally naming it Indian Cure Springs. Many a person who thought they were on their death bed went, were cured, and lived for a long time thereafter. Claimed as an A-Z cure (as was most other `mineral' water), by the early 20's, Verde Hot Springs water was bottled and shipped all over the country; the bottles must have been well padded to have survived the ride back out to civilization! As with so many other springs, Verde later became the site of a grand health facility in 1931. The last remnants burned in 1962; plans to rebuild never bore fruit... o Watson Wash Hot Well. Note: BLM capped this resource in 2006.
o Watson Wash Hot Well. We just spent two days at and near Watson Wash Hot Well, Thatcher, Arizona. It's alive and well and the wonderful waters are still flowing. Some devoted locals keep the place picked up. They report loud, litterbug partiers are still a problem sometimes, making it a Hotel California Soak -- heaven one minute, then hell the next. And then maybe back again. One couple who helped build the superb soaking tub reported that BLM backed off on plugging the well because of threats from citizens that they'd sue if the well was capped, thereby ruining, killing, and totally altering forever the small ecosystem the well created and has supported for decades... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Watson Wash Hot Well. Veterans of all of six hot springs and wells as of this writing, we're happy to say that 90% of all age people using even the relatively public ones do so unencumbered by unhealthy cloth. Great. That's during the week. Our first full weekend at Watson Hot Well was a (clothed) disaster. People running around all over the place with clothes on. People in the tub with bathing suits on. People in the tub FULLY CLOTHED in street clothes... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
