Beechgrove Beach, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

January and February 2003

February 20 - construction looking at East Ave. tunnels

These are new pictures from my walks on Jan 29, 2003 and Feb 20, 2003, as well as some high resolution pics of the project map. Please note most of these are full size graphics except for the maps. Clicking the small image maps will display larger images, over 200KB each.

January 29 - closeup from hill

When I was down on Feb 20, the construction is very noticeable from the hill and the beach. The current construction is going to be the "Pedestrian Node" which you can see on the project map is at the mid-point of the overall project.

The Node can be reached from the bottom of Port Union Rd through the underpass built in 2002.

February 20 - construction looking west at beach

I spoke to the construction supervisors when I was there and they are only working on the Node for now. There is very little landfill available over the winter and it will take _a lot_ of trucks to fill in what they started.

They expect more fill once spring rolls around and demolition of buildings and streets begins. After the Node, the priority will be to work west toward the beach. When standing on the Node, you can clearly see the hill and, when further out, the beach.

Providing they get enough fill to complete the Node, they will begin working west toward the beach. As Ron (from another discussion) points out, this part will also require a significant amount of fill due to the construction of piers into the lake to prevent erosion. The construction guys didn't think they would get much further than the Node this year.

Access to the beach from the Node will be difficult, but not impossible for those who don't want to cross the train bridge. However, I think you will still have to walk along the tracks, or climb over the huge rocks at the bottom of the train embankment. I'd think the distance will be about the same as from the Beechgrove parking lot.
