July 1 - 4, 2004

CyberNorth... July 1st Long Weekend.

This year the Canada holiday provided an extended long weekend for many Canadians, some of whom chose to spend it at the New Forest annual gathering of friends... many of them on-line friends who meet in "3-D" only one or two times a year. The July 4th Independence day holiday landed on the Sunday this year, making the American holiday weekend shifted from the Canadian by one day. Add to that the fact that Friday, July 2nd was not a holiday in Canada and many had to work, and you have a real mixed bag.

Despite all that, The RVs and campers started arriving on Thursday, more on Friday and by Saturday the place was starting to look positively full! Actually, there was lots more room, but this was undoubtedly one of the busiest weekends in the New Forests short life.

Something weird happened this year. Normally, we order up a weekend of cold rainy weather, or winds so strong you can barely hold down a fifth wheel. Normally, we schedule events and cancel them due to the weather. This year, there was glorious weather, perfect for sitting around, chatting with old friends, doing exactly nothing. And that is pretty much what we did.

Thursday night was quite quiet, being a travel day and not everyone having arrived. The clubhouse was quiet most of the day and dead by 9pm. Friday was much busier, a real god-given-hang-out-by-the-pool-till-you-Fry-Day. Thanks to Catherine, an impromptu pot-luck was organized at the clubhouse and was attended by literally dozens. Considering no previous allocation of "pots", it worked out rather perfectly with a good balance of foods. A bonfire and some heavy duty partying into the wee hours at the clubhouse contrasted mightily with a more laid back gang at the back, who chose an old-style get together around a campfire with guitars and singers. Something for everyone.

Saturday the place was getting full(er). Somehow everyone got their rigs over "Ya-gotta-be-kidding" bridge having passed "oh-my-gawd" lake. No one went through the bridge (this time) and no bodies have been dredged up in the lake, so far. Larry Bean promises the place will look better soon. That is what he said last year too, but it IS starting to shape up. However, this was a big weekend, and it was pulled off without the promised bridge repairs, the promised electrical work, and the promised finished lake.... Maybe next year.

Our "house" band, Flashback, appeared for their third year (fourth maybe?) and performed in the sun on the deck mid afternoon. 2Pm New Forest Time (NFT), and if you do not know what that means, then you still expect things to start on time. We think our band is starting to get comfortable in their surroundings, for they spent much time in the pool and pool area.

Later, 6pm NFT, more than 75 people joined in a barbeque fit for a king, and a queen or two. Thanks to the volunteers manning the Beast, an enormous pile of steaks, and potatoes, and salads were devoured. Thanks to the volunteers, it was all cleaned up promptly afterwards. Uncle Dave presented a few awards, in the usual Uncle Dave style: "I did not get to the back to judge the decorated sites. Were there any good ones? OK, here is the prize.". A few other awards for costumes, some good some bad.

After a long break, Flashback entertained with quite a number of sets, good ol music we all love. We love these guys (and gal). They took a break at dusk while an amazing fireworks display lit up the sky across the pond. There were many great rockets, sizzlers, and screamers, so why was it that the biggest cheer went up for one rocket that misfired itself straight into the pond? Scream kerthunk splash fizzle cheer. Wild cheer.

Flashback closed out the night while the bonfire burned brightly. A great night of camaraderie and way, way too much fun, if you know what we mean.

Sunday morning being travel day saw many rigs leave early, although some of our stateside friends stayed for their Monday holiday. A pancake breakfast was served up with Jimmy providing a dose-o-entertainment by throwing what he thought was an empty fireworks box on the embers of the bonfire. After it became clear that it was not empty (bang, zoom) he decided to move Uncle Daves truck. He was not even out of it before a three pronged rocket bracketed the truck including sending one sizzler right up the back of the truck. No damage done, but it had the whole deck of breakfasters screaming with laughter.

Another great weekend in the sun at The New forest. May there be many more like it.
