Four Seasons Resort, Ontario, Canada

Last week of August 2002

My family and I (wife and 14 year old daughter) spent four nights at the Four Seasons Resort during the last week of August. Overall, I'd say the experience was pretty good, although it was by no means perfect.

It started out with two small errors in the directions as listed in Four Seasons' Web site. Directions can be found on the "Contact us" page. I attempted to follow the directions for American visitors. They said to "take the 403 Hamilton cutoff and go North." Too bad 403 is an east-west highway. It should have said to go west. By compass, however, you'd be going south. Further on in the directions, it says to go 8.0 miles along Highway 6. The actual distance is 9 or 10. This isn't much of a problem because there is a sign that says "Four Seasons Nudist Resort, 1/4 km" at the road on which to turn. I have never seen a nudist facility so well marked in the U.S. Anyway, I recommend you take an Ontario map with you - the place isn't difficult to find if you're following a map. Just don't follow the map that appears on Four Seasons' Web site--it makes little sense.

We arrived on Monday evening at about 7:00 PM. We were told to arrive before 7:30. The bartender had to leave the bar to take us to our room, and he was very helpful and pleasant. He never gave us the key to the minibar, for which we were grateful. He also had to bring in a cot for our daughter--it should have been done earlier, but it was not a problem, as the resort's restaurant was closed and we had to go out to dinner. The bartender directed us to a nearby family restaurant called "Breezy Corners." We were not encouraged by its appearance. The place didn't look terrible, but I had not had too many good meals in "family restaurants," and this one didn't look too good. However, my fears were unfounded--the food was very good, the service was excellent, the portions were huge, and the prices were quite reasonable.

After arriving back at the resort after leaving home about 9 hours earlier, my wife and daughter decided to vegetate in the room. We were disappointed to see that our bed was a full-sized bed. Even though we are small people, we are used to a king, so this bed was a little uncomfortable. There were no extra pillows in the room, either, and we prefer 2 pillows apiece. We decided, however, that it was OK, so we didn't complain.

Otherwise, the room was pleasantly decorated and had a balcony overlooking the outdoor pool. The pool has a waterfall, and the sound from this was very soothing. There was a coffee maker in the room, although there was no coffee. The room had no phone. My AT&T wireless phone got a strong signal everywhere in the resort. The bathroom was well-stocked with shampoo and other convenience items, including a sewing kit (?). Our room was considered a "deluxe room." Regular rooms do not have bathrooms or TVs, and maybe not air conditioning, although I'm not sure. There is only a $20 price difference between room types.

There was supposed to be satellite TV, and since we don't have cable at home, my daughter couldn't wait to turn on the TV. I'm not sure if there were any satellite channels--I saw mostly broadcast channels, many very snowy. I don't go on vacation to watch TV, so I didn't particularly care. However, as my daughter was flipping through channels, she discovered a porn channel, which turned out to run 24 hours. I'm not against porn, and I'm not worried that my daughter might have been harmed by seeing a few seconds of it, but I am against porn channels at nudist resorts, especially with no warning. I asked at the desk the next morning if they could turn off the porn channel, and the lady, who I think was an owner, said that she didn't know how and that she would ask the maintenance man. Meanwhile, I figured out how to program the remote to skip over that channel. It could have been accessed directly, but I had no fear that my daughter would try. I am a bit unhappy that they wouldn't have prepared the room by programming the porn channel out before we arrived--we did have reservations for 2 adults and one 14 year old. The local water tasted awful and was barely potable. We didn't even want to brush our teeth with it. I bought bottled water at a convenience store the next day.

Anyway, back to the first evening. I got undressed and looked around the clubhouse/motel building. It was fairly nice, with a beautiful, large indoor pool, a bar, a night club/restaurant, a locker room, and a shower/whirlpool room. The restaurant had very limited hours, and we didn't see it open until after we checked out on Friday. On Monday night, the night club had Karaoke, with adults and children participating. People were fully dressed or topfree. Since my family was in the room and I was nude, I didn't go in.

I went up to the huge exercise room to get some aerobic exercise. Several of the aerobic machines were not functioning, but I found a great machine that was sort of like a cross-country skiing machine, but not exactly, and got a great workout. After I took a shower, back in the room, I went back into the clubhouse. I was considering swimming, but the place was very dark.

Other than making 2 trips to Breezy Corners for breakfast and dinner (We didn't see the resort's restaurant open until after we checked out on Friday), we spent Tuesday at the resort. The outdoor pool was beautiful with the rocky waterfall. The water in the indoor and outdoor pools was crystal clear, and not cold. We had a very relaxing day. There is a boutique by the pool. It wasn't open while we were there, although my wife asked to see it. There was a very odd collection of merchandise including used toys, used apparel, and even used shoes. Given the condition of the tap water, I had hoped they would have sold water by the gallon (or 4-liter bottle), but the best we could do was to buy individual-sized bottles of water from the bar.

Near the pool is a small pond with a playground next to it. The Web site promised paddle boats, but their one paddle boat was broken and not in service. While we were there we found out that there were to be Mr. and Miss Nude World contests there on the weekend (after we were to check out). We aren't offended by this sort of thing, but don't think it's necessarily appropriate for a family nudist resort. The resort also has many pictures on its walls of various events, which include such contests as Miss and Mr. Four Seasons, also inappropriate in our opinions. Even stranger were the many photos of attractive nude women in the hallways. These were apparently photos of members that were taken on the grounds.

We hardly used the common facilities on Wednesday and Thursday as we spent them sight-seeing in Toronto, about an hour away. When I had made the reservation, I had mentioned that we would be doing this and I asked if some of the grounds fees could be waived. The woman told me that we could discuss it while we were there. I asked at check-out and they were very accommodating. We told them we spent 2 days in Toronto, so they graciously offered to take 2 days worth of the 4 days grounds fees off the bill. I did my exercise swim while my daughter gave my wife a pool (billiards) lesson.

The kitchen finally opened at 12:00. We got lunch from there. The restaurant has no table service, so we got our food from the window and brought it to one of the many tables by the indoor pool. We were again surprised to find outstanding food at reasonable prices. They didn't use iceberg--even the garden salads had romaine lettuce.

After that we left, not sure what to make of our experience. Despite the oddities, we had a good time, and would consider returning.
