Lilly Valley report, Ontario, Canada

June 2003

Just returned last night from a lengthy stay at Lilly Valley.

We left on Saturday, June 28 and arrived early in the afternoon giving us time to setup camp and relax before the chili cookoff. Great variety of chili with 8 entries to sample. Lots of buns and salads to accompany the chili.

Lilly Valley is a small rustic park with a few trailers for rent. Most campers bring their RVs or tent in the meadow. The majority of members day trip. While there is an indoor pool and an outdoor pool, along with steam room and hot tub, the main feature of the camp is the people. Close knit and very friendly, even first timers are immediately drawn into the conversations that continually going on around the picnic tables. Not the place to go if you are looking for fancy facilities or wild nighttime activities, but if you are looking for a place where you can feel like part of the family in minutes, Lilly Valley will suit you fine.

Sunday, we relaxed in the 85 degree weather, swimming and sunning. Wonderful tanning weather. Monday was much the same. July 1st, the Canadian version of Independence day was beautiful but quite hot with temperatures climbing into the 90s. A good crowd was on hand for the evening fireworks display, with the club putting up half the cost and the members contributing the other half. July 4th saw a good sized crowd of American members and guests over for the holiday. Small thunderstorm at dusk put a damper on the fireworks, but we did have a good time in the lounge playing games and engaging in quite a long gabfest.

The humidity dropped for Saturday and Sunday, but the heat returned with temps on Saturday around 82 and Sunday it climbed to 88. Indoor pool temperature was 76 and the outdoor pool was 85. Sunday, the badminton court was busy and there was a informal horseshoe competition and even Petanque game. The gardening crew (member volunteers) were busy weeding and adding peat moss to the many gardens. Birding was good with Rose Breasted Grosbeaks, Goldfinches, Chiminy swifts, Orioles and other birds in good numbers.

All in all, a great time with each day averaging about 30 people in camp. The only drawback was having to run into town to pick up ice every two days. Having to get dressed for that was a bummer. But then, having to get dressed anytime is a drag.

Looking forward to our next week of camping at the beginning of August when Lilly Valley celebrates its 40th year of operation. Many past members have been contacted and some have said that they will be back for the party. It was initially planned to be on August 2nd, a Saturday, but the amount of interest has caused the manager to make it into a weekend affair for August 2 and 3.
