Sorobon Beach Resort
Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles) ReportSummer 2001
Bonaire is one of the ABC islands, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, officially know as the Netherlands Antilles, even though Aruba is separate country with its own currency and national flag. The islands are noted for their almost constant year-round temperature, 80's during the day, just right for enjoying the Caribbean water. The islands enjoy an ideal location south of the hurricane belt, and are cooled by constant trade winds, which are strong at times. This summer (2001) we spent 3 weeks on the islands, 10 days at the Sorobon Beach Resort, a CO resort. During our 3 weeks, only one day had sporadic rain showers, otherwise we enjoyed constant sun.
I am always a little apprehensive concerning visits to CO resorts since we enjoy amenities, which are frequently absent from many resorts. Sorobon Beach Resort lacks many amenities, but makes up for the deficiency by its ideal location on Lac Bay, its natural beauty, and ideal weather for nudists. For those demanding amenities there is no air-conditioning, no TV/radio, no newspapers, no swimming pool, no Jacuzzi, no sport facilities except kayaks, snorkeling, and swimming. Wind surfing school is immediately adjacent to the resort, which may cause some timid nudists concern with "textiles" nearby. It was my observation that the "textiles" readily accept the naturists.
The duplex cabins are sparse but adequately furnished. Large living area was equipped with dining table, chairs, coffee table, couch, suitable for one person to sleep, and small efficiency kitchen with stove and refrigerator. The bedroom contained a comfortable double bed, night stands, and security safe. A spotlessly clean bathroom is adjacent. I preferred my baths under the hose found on the wide porch of each cabin. Ceiling and oscillating fans offer the only cooling, but we found the bedroom fans unnecessary at night. We preferred to sleep, nude of course, with all windows and doors open with cool trade winds caressing us. The sun rises early each morning and so did I. I rolled out of bed each morning, strolled a few steps to the beach, and enjoyed a long nude beach walk, before the beach or the adjacent wind surfing facility was inhabited. Sorobon has a pier which extends into the bay. Sitting on the pier in early morning offered unequal tranquility. The cabins make a soft curve along the beach, and cabins 14 through 30 are directly on the beach. We reserved cabin 14, and were not disappointed.
The private Sorobon beach becomes active around 10:00 AM. The resort provides palm-frond covered shelters to protect against the relentless sun. My wife preferred the peace and protection of the shelters during the day, while I enjoyed the water. Lac Bay is clear, aqua blue, with mostly sandy bottom. It is protected by a coral reef at its entrance from the ocean. Each day, I walked across the bay since the depth is mostly only shin high. Approaching the coral reef, there are some areas with beautiful underwater life for interesting snorkeling. Sea urchins and sharp coral are rare in Lac Bay, but I do recommend shoes when snorkeling. Nudity in Bay is acceptable, even though one encounters "textiles."
Evenings began with happy hour at the resort bar. All drinks are half price. It was here that we enjoyed the company of others from Norway, Belgium, Holland and USA. The interesting mix provided some exhilarating conversation and provided some new friends who I hope will become permanent friends. Happy hour is followed by dinner except Friday nights when guests must cook in or visit the many available restaurants. The resort and island food in general is adequate, tasty, and sometimes unique. Don't expect gourmet food, as you can find in Aruba. It is not available in Bonaire. Breakfast and lunch are also available. I was nude for all meals, while my wife wore a pareo. We visited a plush resort one evening for dinner and dancing. I ordered an old fashion. The waitress did not now what it was, and apparently the bar tender did not either. I drink my old fashion, more like lime and bourbon, with much amusement, but without complaint.
On Mondays a nude sailing and snorkeling trip is offered for $30.00/person. Don't miss it. There were 6 guests and a crew of 2 on the trimaran. Drinks and snacks are served. All snorking gear is provided. There is nothing like the freedom of snorkeling nude. We met some islanders on the trip, actually tourist from Florida, who own a villa in Bonaire. We were invited to their home for cocktails, and were welcomed by a nude host. It did not take me long to get nude, while enjoying the exquisite view, sipping cool drinks, and enjoying dips in the pool. We were soon all in the pool as we enjoyed our drinks.
We rented a Budget car for our stay. The resort provides transportation to the nearby airport and to town for shopping. The car provided additional freedom to explore the island, and its extensive national park. I drove the isolated roads, explored the coastline, and hiked the trails all nude to my wife's dismay. She is gradually getting use to my antics while we are on vacation. I did the same on Aruba, and only once did I expose myself to a "textile." Forgetting that I was naked, I jumped out of the car on a deserted road, to examine what I thought was a flat tire. While examining the tire, a truck passed, and flashed me a thumbs-up sign. I returned the greeting while standing in my complete nudity.
I would be remiss, if I did not mention the graciousness of the resort employees. The front desk personnel were also the bartenders for happy hour. Mixing drinks was unprecedented entertainment in its own. The young European women provided more laughs, fun, and entertainment, than quality of drink. Although the guests were nude, the staff remained clothed. The owner, a gracious gentleman, from Holland, a real estate investor, arrived during our stay with his extended family of 6 children. He informed me of the history of Sorobon, which is another story, and of his Amazon CO resort. I am looking forward to visiting the latter.
Will we return to Sorobon. You bet we will! Of all the resorts I have visited, and that includes, Lanzarote, Cap d'Agde, Paradise, Avalon, Cypress Cove, Haulover, Tenerife, etc., Sorobon tops the list. Hope that you will enjoy it as much.
