Firefly in Negril, Jamaica

My husband and I just returned from a one-week stay at Firefly in Negril, Jamaica. We were there from February 10-17, 2001. We landed at the airport in Montego Bay and travelled to Firefly by taxi - $100 US return trip total. You can also fly from MoBay to Negril at a slightly higher rate, but you will not see the beautiful Jamaican countryside nor experience the wild car ride! Our cab driver stopped so we could get some ice cold Red Stripe beer for the 90-minute drive, and we were soon at the entrance to Firefly.

Firefly is very small and friendly and very clean. It is NOT a resort. It is clothing optional, but the week we were there, there were more nudists than textile tourists. Nudity is only permitted on the beach and in the water, of course; ladies may go topless when frequenting the bar or travelling to and from their room. You may also use the property's hot tub nude. Rooms are sufficient - not elaborate - and all have efficiency kitchenettes and private bath. Firefly's bar serves a limited menu breakfast and lunch - the pancakes are divine - and there is free coffee each morning. Surprisingly, it is instant Nescafe! - but it is good enough to sip while watching the beautiful waves slap the shore. Next time we will take a coffee maker and purchase some Blue Mountain for our room. We are, after all, in Jamaica!

Firefly is set almost in the middle of Negril's seven-mile beach and a casual stroll down the beach will take you to a multitude of restaurants or night clubs. We ate fabulous meals - jerk chicken and fish mostly - prepared with coconut sauces and other tropical concoctions. The beach is very safe after dark. You will be approached by vendors with everything for sale - but a simple "No, thanks" will send them quietly on their way. We saw senior citizens walking the beach at night, and when I saw that, I thought how truly safe it is. There are many tourists walking to and from the clubs and restaurants, so you are seldom alone. We were in Jamaica 12 years ago, and the vendors were much more aggressive then. This was a very pleasant and welcome change.

A little further west of the beach area is the "West End" of Negril, also known as "The Cliffs". There we visited a resort called Xtabi. They permit nude sunbathing on their rock sun terraces, but there is no beach. This resort is a little more upmarket than Firefly, but then again, so is the price.

Firefly is a great place to go to relax and let your hair down for a week. We packed far too many clothes ... you only need a couple pair of shorts and a few t-shirts. Negril is not a dress-up place. We didn't wear shoes or sandals for the entire week! When booking Firefly, remember the good bargain you are getting, and don't expect a Sandals or Club Med resort. We spoke to a couple of people who were disappointed in their accommodations, because they thought it would be like Sandals. Obviously, they did not do a price comparison. This is definite value for money, but if you want lavish bedroom furniture and party-makers, this is not for you.

Also on Firefly's property are four "cabins" - very rustic - which are $40/night per couple! The guests who stay in these share a washroom and shower facility, but if you're on a shoestring budget or just want to get away, these units are more than suitable!

Firefly also has a new accommodation on their property - a three-storey structure with four units that are more modern and lavish. There are two penthouse suites and two apartments, I believe. Cost is higher, but if anyone is particularly fussy, this might be for them.

I think the best way to sum up a place is to comment on whether or not you would return ... and we will most definitely return to Firefly.
