Firefly Beach Cottages in Negril, Jamaica
February, 2002
On February 20th our smiles turned upside down as we packed our bags into the taxi and departed Firefly Beach Cottages in Negril, Jamaica. This had been our second visit and this time we extended our stay to 12 days, plus we took along friends from Canada to share the Firefly and Negril experience. They, too, fell in love and hope to return to Firefly again in the future. For us ... well, we already have our reservations for February 2003 at Firefly, so now all we have to do is count sleeps.
The property is just as beautiful as we remembered. Being repeat guests, we ran into people we met last year so it was a bit like "homecoming week"; a very pleasant experience and you tend to feel like one of the family. Additionally, many of the staff remembered my husband and me and welcomed us like family coming home! Upon arrival at the property, we immediately shed our clothes for the mandatory Caribbean dip, then joined our friends - new and old alike - at Firefly's quaint beach bar to catch up on each other's news. Even some of the beach vendors remembered and welcomed us back!
This year we stayed in the small cottage which stands alone on the property and has an adjoining patio, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation with hummingbird feeders tucked in amongst the branches. What a joy to watch these tiny birds flit from one feeder to the next. The cottage itself was charming, also offering a full kitchen. We went into town our second day and purchased groceries to prepare breakfasts and lunches. For evening meals, we headed down the beach and believe me when I say the food in Negril cannot be topped. We had exquisite meals each and every evening, then strolled along to the nightly reggae concerts (free) held at a different club on the beach each night. Nothing compares to standing under a star-studded sky amongst a crowd of natives and travelers, listening to live reggae.
Our hats are tipped to the owners of Firefly - David and Audrey Sykes - for operating a business which beckons visitors to return ... again and again.
