Before I went to Jamaica, I downloaded 2 write-ups on Couples. One came from Compuserve's HSX100 forum (Naturist Lifestyles section), and the other from their Caribbean Forum. They were both so well written and accurate that there seems little point to my doing another review of the resort. However, there are a few personal viewpoints that I though you might find interesting....
Couples is not a naturist resort. It has a small island, situated about a quarter mile away from the main beach, which is kept exclusively for nude recreation. Nudity is not permitted anywhere else. While they do not ban toplessness, they direct people to a specific area for this and make it clear that it's frowned upon elsewhere (the topless area was almost never used).
We chose Couples because it was a compromise between my desire to be nude as much as possible and Denise's reluctance to build a holiday around naturism. It proved to be a very good compromise.
The standard of maintenance on the island was way below the standard of the rest of the resort, and bad weather had caused the water supply to be cut off for most of our stay. No water meant no wash-room and a limitation to the drinks that could be mixed. Despite all that, Denise loved the atmosphere and we spent the majority of the daylight hours there. Denise was often to be found behind the bar mixing drinks for everyone while the bartender took a break or went to fetch food for us {grin}.
I was able to enjoy my unusual hobby of 'bird watching while nude'... while I was on the island. I saw a total of 27 species of bird while I was in Jamaica. 25 of these were lifers (species seen for the first time). 12 of these were seen while I was nude {smile}. They included some very nice birds... Little Blue Heron, Cattle Egret, Greater Antillean Grackle, Bananaquit, Magnificent Frigate Bird, Turkey Vulture, Antillean Palm Swift, Brown Pelican, White-crowned Pigeon, Loggerhead Kingbird, Zenaida Dove and White-tailed Tropic Bird. Pictured here is the Little Blue Heron.
In addition to the island, we managed many hours of nude relaxation elsewhere. Obviously, we never wore clothing when in our room. Our room was number 123. It was easy to remember and
, without doubt, the best room for our needs in the whole resort. We were on the ground floor and had a wonderful patio with a marble floor, tiered walls with built in flower boxes and nice wrought iron furniture.
A path ran down the back of all the patios, but I only saw other guests use that path once. I used it often. This meant that we had almost complete privacy there. Security guards walked the path every couple of hours. The first time one of them passed while I was sitting there naked... I said "Hi there!, good evening". He replied "Yeah mon, irie"
. I spent a short amount of time there every morning. In the evening, after the cabaret had finished, Denise would read in bed for half an hour and go to sleep. I would get a bottle of red wine from the bar and sit out on the patio, doing my birding write-ups and reading, until the early hours. I never wore any clothing. Denise often joined me on the patio for short periods, but she found the insects to be a problem. She also remained nude while she was out there. Beyond the patio were the main hotel gardens and an area known as the jungle. We were screened from them by a border of coconut trees and various tropical shrubs and bushes. In the 'jungle' there were 2 small (designed for a couple) hot tubs. Only one room was closer to the hot tubs than we were, and they didn't have our privacy. Most evenings, Denise and I would take a hummingbird cocktail to one of the tubs. They were illuminated, but situated in dense areas of vegetation (hence the 'jungle' tag). We would wear a towel to walk the short distance to the tub and, of course, remained nude while in there.
There are also 3 communal hot tubs. Two are in open areas near the main pool. The third is in a more secluded area away from all the activities. It isn't illuminated. On one occasion we decided to try it out.... it was more bubbly than the small ones and Denise wanted to try swimming in it
. When we got there, it was empty. We stripped off and jumped in. Unfortunately, another couple joined us just before we were ready to leave . They must have been able to see that Denise wore no top, but what else they could see... I have no idea. Getting out of that tub discretely was a big problem , but we did, and lived to tell the tale {smile}. As our holiday was in a resort that is NOT naturist I packed a lot of clothing. I brought most of it back still clean {grin}.
One other thing... On the last day the sea was too rough for boats to land on the island. It was the only time that we used the main beach. Denise and 3 other, female, island regulars went topless {smile}.
