Point Village (Negril Jamaica) Report

January 2001

We went to Point Village in Negril last January. Negril is a wonderful 2 hour drive from Montego Bay airport, including a stop for Red Stripe Beer. The road is primitive and the trip slow, but it sort of gets you in gear for Jamaica. Type A people are mind-wiped during the ride and don't mind the definitely different pace of Jamaica for the rest of the trip.

We had a lovely two bedroom condo for four people, with a living room and kitchen downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs. The workaholic among us was able to plug his computer in in the living room and write a chapter he was working on when we went out reveling. We started out on the breakfast only plan, but switched to all-inclusive when one of us stepped on a sea-urchin and didn't feel like walking too much. The food is OK, the drinks (especially silly rum drinks and Red Stripe) fine. The best meal is breakfast, with made-to-order omlets and always a real Jamaican dish like ackee and salt fish.

The nude beach is lovely, a tiny cove that borders on the nude beach of Hedonism II. The beach is clothing optional, but the huge numbers of Hedobodies on the other side of the jetty provide a nude atmosphere that makes the more sedate beach at Point Village definitely appropriate for nudity. There is a small shack where you can get rum punch, beer, or soft drinks. There are comfortable lounges, a few rafts for anyone to use, and both shade and sun. Beware, however: there are sea urchins and spiny anemones. Wear water shoes if you are going to walk. Snorkeling is good at the nude beach - we even saw a baby barracuda. We watched the sun set every day from the beach.

You also have the option of drifting over to Hedonism II if you want to have the sort of experience that TNS/AANR frown upon. I was floating on a raft on the Point Village side of the jetty and a Jamaican entrepreneur in a small boat asked me if I wanted any ganja. When I said I didn't he asked me if I wanted any Viagra, 'to keep the bamboo up.' He probably thought that I had drifted over from the Hedo side.

One day we took a raft and swam up the channel past Booby Cay into Bloody Bay, and stopped at the nude beach at Grand Lido. That also looked pleasant, and they had a nude pool and hot tub as well as a beach. The pool and hot tub at Point Village are obdurately textile, even at 3:00 AM. You can walk to the nude beach at Bloody Bay, where you can get lobsters at lunch, in about 20 minutes. Point Village is on Rutland Point, and the nude beach is actually the northernmost part of the Seven Mile Beach. You walk through Hedonism, from the nude part to the clothed part, and then through a number of all-inclusives that are exceedingly textile, then through an undeveloped part, and then through the general part of the beach. It was certainly worth the trip. Lunch at Cosmo's was very good.

If you want a relaxing vacation attached to a nice small nude beach, Point Village is wonderful.
