Secrets, Jamaica
March, 2000.
I went to "Secrets", Firefly's beach cottages adjunct in March. Not realizing that the entire month of March is Spring Break month in Jamaica, I was a little disappointed to find the entire "7 mile beach", as it's touted to be, liberally sprinkled with 20-something college students. Not that I'd object, normally, but I had been looking forward to a nude vacation.
The problem with the "breakers", as the Jamaicans call them, is that, for the most part, they only strip down for the bar events at night. I could only indulge myself, without sticking out as an eccentric, in the early morning, before they'd recovered from the previous night's revelries. I took no side trips, or other tours. My idea of a vacation is relaxation. I spent a lot of time on the beach in swimwear, and it was nice. But not what I'd imagined. The stricture of Firefly's 'no nudity in bar or garden' policy added to my feeling of disappointment. I'd like to go back, but at a different time of year.
The facilities -- the Secrets cottages -- were adequate for the price. The cost for what amounted to a little shack near the beach was $30 U.S./night. A bed, a table, and a door to go out was what it was. What more does one need? The toilet was the community facility, and the shower was outdoor, in the garden area, but who cares? A confusion about my 6 night reservation resulted in my being upgraded to another room, with self-contained bathroom, refrigerator and hotplate for minimalist cooking.
Still, who wants to cook when the food is so readily available and inexpensive? A half chicken, "Jerk Style" was available across Norman Manley Blvd. for $280J, or about $7 U.S. The other restaurants along the beach ranged in price from a little less than that to a great deal more, depending on what the owners thought the traffic could bear.
Jamaica is a friendly place -- of course, like most tourist-oriented places, many people want to sell you something. And I have been cautioned by those who have reason to do so, that Kingston can be a dangerous place. I'd definitely go back -- both to Jamaica and to Firefly or Secrets.
