Sol Club Cayo Largo - Cayo Largo, Cuba, Report
January 2005
Got back yesterday from Sol Club in Cuba for the week and altogether it was a fantastic trip. Squeaked out at 6:30am from Toronto just as the snow started to fall on the saturday and got down there to beautiful sunny weather.
Here is the breakdown.
Hotel - Is beatiful - well maintained and clean. Never had a problem with any of the staff and everyone was very friendly. Any problems that we had were quickly resolved - like the remote for the A/C was not working and it was fixed within an hour of me stopping into the front desk.
Food - one of the major complaints I saw in the trip reports was the food. I don't know I never had a problem with it. There was great variation in the Buffet restaurant for Breakfast and Dinner. The food had a more European leaning in style so if you are expecting MacDonald's then perhaps you should go to Disneyland. - there was all plenty to be had and a great variety and I think of myself as a pretty picky eater. The main pool bar where you can get lunch had more "Western" type food - Hamburgers, pizza, French Fries, etc. and it was good. Service was good once you figured out the best way to do it. Pick one location to sit so you get the same server every day and throw them some cash on occasion and they will do anything for you. The Capitalist system is alive and well in Cuba.
Weather - Frankly I think we got very lucky. Not a drop of Rain the entire week. Sunny and cloudless on most days and great temps. The only day that was a little off was the Monday and just because of a cooler north Wind. By afternoon everything was good and through the week Temps just got better with a nice breeze to keep things from getting too hot.
Beach - This will be most people's reason to be coming and the beach in front of Sol and Pelicano are the nicest ones of all the hotels. I found the beach to be spectacular. The sand is pure white and like icing sugar in most places. On top of that if you want nude sunbathing the western most part of the beach in front of Sol Club was the desiginated clothing opional area. You should be aware that you are going to have to deal with people who don't know/or come to have a look because you are not remote. We didn't have a problem with it and it is not like some places heavy with gawkers.
Also if you walk west you can walk for hours. Some people did this nude (including girlfriend and I) and never had a problem with any of the clothed or topless walkers. It seemed by the end of the week there was quite a bit more nude activity both in walking and laying out (the nudes were making converts). I would say by Thursday at least a 1/4 of the beach (and little huts) was being used nude. Toplessness was common all over the rest of the beach.
Overall - we had a fantastic time with very little to complain about and would recommend the place highly. If anyone has questions, email me at the address above.
