St. Lucia
My wife and I stayed at the Royal St Lucian Hotel in April 2000. It is located on the Reduit beach and immediately adjacent to the Rex St Lucian [its sister hotel] and the all inclusive resort called Papillion. The Rex St Lucian has been closed due to hurricane damage for some months, but was due to re-open 22nd April 2000.
I noted the report submitted by "dotntom" regarding their experiences at the Rex St Lucian but my wife and I saw absolutely no nude sunbathing on this beach at all. There was also no topless sunbathing anywhere. I find it difficult to believe that as per dotntom's report that; "couples were showering in the nude on the beach showers" outside the Rex, and that "men wore next to no covering" on the beach while sunbathing because both the hotel's information sheets in the rooms clearly state that "topless sunbathing is illegal in St. Lucia and therefore not permitted in the hotels or on the beach itself.
I can confirm that naturism and topless sunbathing is not permitted nor practised in St Lucia on any of the popular beaches we visited, nor at any of the major hotels. We visited all the hotels and beachfronts in Rodney Bay, and also visited the Windjammer Landing Resort, the Wyndham Morgan Bay Hotel, both the Sandals hotels, Anse Chastanet and the Jalouise Hilton. All sunbathers wore swimsuits and or bikinis. The Reduit beach is relatively short [about 1 mile only] and heavily patrolled by hotel security guards and the local police. The Royal St Lucian hotel was "very quiet" in the evenings and there was certainly no nude swimming in the pools or on the beach in the evenings or at night. The hotels policy towards topless and or nude sunbathing and nude swimming are made very clear to all guests, i.e. they are not permitted. Anybody looking to achieve an all over sun tan on St Lucia will be very disappointed unless staying in a private villa!
