Orient Beach, St. Martin, Caribbean, Report.
July 2003
On July 1, 2003, the Disney Cruise we were on, docked in St. Martin.
Although the Disney folks offer an excursion to Orient Beach, we thought it would be less expensive to go on our own. Going it alone also allowed us to make our own schedule. We took an island tour excursion in the morning, and after a quick lunch on the ship we followed the signs for taxis to find a ride. At the taxi stand, a gentleman asked us where we wanted to go, and directed us to a bench. The taxis are really vans and they try to fill them up with as many people as they can before they leave. The good news is that the more people who are in the taxi, the lower the price. If memory serves me correctly, the taxi filled, and I think the fare ended up being something like $6.00/person, one way. Most of those in the van were dropped off before we reached the beach. Only an older couple and we were left for the remainder of the ride.
The other couple had been to Orient Beach before, but had never experienced it nude. We've been enjoying nude recreation for several years, but had never been to Orient Beach. Although we asked to be dropped at the Club Orient side of the beach, the driver dropped us off some distance from Club Orient. My wife's knee has been giving her some problems, but as we could see our destination, and she felt she could walk to it, we decided not to make an issue of it. Everything I'd read about Orient Beach indicated it was top free throughout, with occasional nudity outside of Club Orient. As we drove toward where we were being dropped off, and as we walked toward Club Orient, I noticed many people on the beach. Except for the three top free women, and the one nude gentleman, it could have been a textile beach.
This all changed when we reached the Club Orient section of the beach, which is marked by a sign. Everyone here, except the security people and the staff were nude. My wife and I quickly undressed and came upon the Club Orient bar. By this time, I'd lost track of the other couple who shared the taxi with us. I asked the waitress for two frozen drinks that contained a liquor made from the local guava berry, which has nothing to do with the fruit known as guava. The drink tasted great, but seemed rather weak. I asked if it was too late in the day to rent an umbrella and some chairs. The waitress told me to just find any chairs and umbrellas that were not being used.
It was extremely crowded, but, eventually we found a couple of chairs and an umbrella. It was a good thing we did, for at that moment, a brief but cold and heavy rain shower fell upon us. Thankfully, the sun quickly reappeared and we were ready to enter the water.
The water was pleasant, clear, blue and calm, with no waves. My wife was in her element. I was doing fine till I noticed all the fish that were swimming around me. Not being a fan of swimming with fish, I decided this would be a good time to explore the rest of the nude side of the beach. Hoping I would discover the rest rooms, my wife joined me. As we walked further down the beach, we came upon the Club Orient Restaurant, where clothing optional dining is permitted. Unfortunately, the timing was such that we would be unable to have dinner there if we wanted to get back to the cruise ship before it sailed away, but we did use their rest rooms. While my wife returned to the water, I continued my explorations.
Most of Club Orient is off limits to those who are not resort guests, but day visitors are allowed to shop in the store so I walked down to the store, and then returned to join my wife in the water. On my way back, I ran into one of the people with whom we shared the cab. He had removed his clothing, and was experiencing nude recreation at a clothing optional beach for the first time. He was having a great time and wanted to learn more. As I was unfamiliar with clothing optional opportunities in the state where he lived, I recommended he check out netnude.com.
After rejoining my wife, for a bit, in the water, we were ready for some sun, and headed for our chairs and umbrella. She told me I'd missed some excitement. She wasn't sure of the details, but as near as she can tell, some textile fellow was wandering about pointing a video camera at people. The people complained to a security guard, as Club Orient does not allow photography on the beach near their resort, as it may scare away their clientele. The textile guy told the security guard that he had no video tape in his camera. The guard asked the fellow to open the camera and the fellow refused. The guard told him he could not leave, until he opened the camera. After getting no cooperation from the textile fellow, the guard drove a utensil ( knife? Ice pick?) through the part of the camera where the tape would be and told the man he could go, or so my wife heard from the witnesses who were closer to the action.
Things were much more peaceful most of the afternoon. Over the hours a handful of textile couples wandered across the beach, but they all kept moving, and we never felt uncomfortable. Eventually, a staff member came by and asked me to pay for the use of the chairs. I asked him what I owed him for the use of the umbrella, and he told me not to worry about it, as the sun was soon going down.
My wife wanted to see the store before we left, so we walked along the path I'd discovered. We bought fairly reasonably priced bottles of Club Orient Water, and I purchased a video of Club Orient, as this was part of my vacation I could not photograph. I asked the lady behind the counter where we could get a taxi back to the ship, and she told me that taxis usually congregate near the next bar/restaurant up the beach from Club Orient.
As we walked back to the beach, we noticed how lovely the Club Orient rental units are. Orient Beach is a beautiful, comfortable beach, and given the chance, I would visit it again, any time. As we reached the end of Club Orient, I, again, noticed, everybody a few feet up ahead, was wearing clothes. My wife had already dressed, but it was time for me to put my clothes back on, as well. While I did so, my wife found a taxi driver who said he would take us both back to the ship for $15.00. That sounded good, so we entered the van and said goodbye to Orient Beach.
