Euronat, France, Report.
July 2003
While touring the southwest of France in the summer of 2003, we stopped at Euronat, claimed by many to be the largest (and by some accounts, nicest) naturist resort in all of Europe.
In all fairness, the weather was marginal that day and thus we may not have seen the place in the best light, but here are a few of our perceptions. Indeed, Euronat is absolutely huge. I would almost compare it to a large subdivision from American suburbia, divided into several neighborhoods named after different continents.
There are rental chalets available to accommodate nearly any size family, and it appears many of them are privately owned. Separate areas are provided for campers and mobile homes, including a new area of development that is still pretty barren in terms of landscape and vegetation. The strongest features of this resort are the village center, offering several restaurants, shops, and even a video game arcade for the kids; and of course, the beautiful south Atlantic beach that stretches for miles in either direction of the resort.
It seems that attitudes regarding nudity are pretty laid back all along the French Atlantic, even on beaches that are not officially designated as naturist. There were a few things that struck us as rather odd during our visit - perhaps a point to point list would be most helpful.
- The restrooms near the village center were terrible!! Amongst the worst we have ever encountered in all our travels through Europe. This was especially surprising given that Euronat is advertised as the flagship resort of France4Naturism - an organization that sets quality standards for a handful of French naturist resorts. Seems these facilities would not meet their criteria by a long shot. We found the restroom blocks out in the camping area to be much better.
- There is a large indoor swimming pool that features a waterslide into an adjoining outdoor pool. BUT, there is a day use fee for anyone wishing to use the pool. I believe a pool pass may be included for rented accommodations, but campers would need to pay a daily fee. Our children were interested in trying out the pool, but as day visitors, it was going to cost over $10.00 for an afternoon swim - so we passed.
- The overall maintenance of the grounds seemed spotty at best. Signs had faded beyond readability, asphalt roads were in pretty bad shape, those sorts of things. Simply not as tidy as some other French naturist centers we have visited.
- Like several of the naturist centers on the west coast of France, the location doesn’t lend itself well to day trips for sightseeing and such. It would be a solid hour’s drive to Bordeaux.
Would we stay there on a future trip? We would consider it simply for the amenities that exist in the village. And many of the new chalets look quite comfortable. Given the fact, however, that we’ve visited other naturist locations that we like so well (Belezy and La Jenny to name a couple) it would be difficult to put our vacation dollars here instead. Cost wise, fees and accommodations at each of these places are comparable.
I would be happy to answer any other questions about Euronat, or for that matter, our other naturist travels in France. Bon journee!
