Two Spas in Germany

In Baden-Baden the 2 famous spas are Friedrichsbad (Roman-Irish Baths) and Caracalla-Terme. Prices at the former are 1996--DM 38 or roughly $30 gets you 3 hrs. DM 28 is w/out the massage. The routine is written on the walls in different languages: take shower, grab towel, put on plastic slippers, hit the warm-air bath for 15 mins, hot-air bath for 5 mins, shower, soap-brush massage--rough and slippery--don't know how long--it appears to be only about 10 mins, shower, lounge under sunbeams and caryatids in on of several different thermal steam baths, swim in big pool under dome--the one mixed area, cold plunge, dry in warmed towels for 30 mins in mellow yellow silent room. Other than this last 30 mins or to use towels to only to dry self off, you are not allowed to wear clothes.

At the other place DM 18 will get you in for 2 hrs, DM 5 will get additional 1/2 hrs DM 1 = $0.70 (1996). It has steamy pools, waterfalls, neck showers, Jacuzzis, hot springs, cold pools, saunas, excercise instructors, lounge chairs cafeteria and bar. Seems dress is bathing suits, but sounds like saunas, cold pools and tanning areas (sounds like some open air or under-dome area) are clothing optional.

------------------------------------------

There is a place in Badenweiller, which is south of Friebourg between it and the Swiss border. I have brochures on it--Cassiopeia Therme--but they are in German. It looks like another Roman-Irish bath type place. The brochure talks about the mineral composition of the water and the temperature (Celsius) of the various pools. It seems the breakout of times in various pools and such is similar to the Roman-Irish bath in Baden-Baden--but just a guess, based on its in German. There are days for men-only and for women-only--but there are mixed days as well. And in the photos, the mixed crowd is in more than just the pool area. Saw the place from the outside--very nice--in a very swanky town--but was late in the day and we had to get going to reach our hotel in Switzerland several hrs away. Bummer.
