Banana Beach - Skiathos Island, Greece
June 1998
Skiathos is one of the most beautiful Greek islands in terms of scenery and beaches. The island is very safe, clean, laid back, the food and fresh fish is very good and the Greeks are extremely friendly and generous. It has tourists of various nationalities, including many Greeks (which is a testimony to the quality of the island overall).
Banana Beach is the most popular nude beach in Skiathos. Looking at it from the sea it is divided into the main central stretch (about 800m long) which is about half nude, an adjoining small right section which is fully nude, and a smaller left section (Little Banana Beach) also fully nude. Having said that, once you get there the atmosphere is so surreal and laid back that nobody cares what you wear, all your mundane concerns about logistics disappear.
Behind the beach are trees that keep the scenery unspoilt and private. The water is extremely clean and blue, you can see small fish swimming by your feet (ideal for snorkelling). You will find many families with children frolicking happily in the sun, plenty of sunbeds and a canteen which serves refreshments and light meals.
Getting there: simply take the island bus to Koukounaries beach. From the bus stop take a side road (sign posted) for Banana Beach. The road is unsurfaced and at times steep, so it's not the kind of road you can walk on barefoot. You have to walk about 15-20 minutes (well worth it, believe me). Nearer the beach, the road forks: Little Banana Beach to the far right, and Banana Beach to the left. If you want to make your life easier you can rent a moped (should cost about $5-8 a day)!
In my opinion, Banana Beach is of excellent quality: scenic, laid back, not too crowded, clean and private. It also has this magical quality when the sun sets and it starts getting empty (after 7 PM). With a bit of Brazilian Jazz in the background, you feel as if time stands still.
