A shot from the balcony of the house

My girlfriend and I rented a house on the beach for a week in Celestun Mexico. Celestun is 92 kilometers from Mirida on the Yucatan. We rented a car and made the drive which took about 1 1/2 hours because you have to drive through some small Mexican villages.

The house can be seen at www.casadeheba.com and can be rented by the week.

It has 2 downstairs bedrooms with 2 single beds in each and a downstairs bathroom with shower. Also on the first floor is a fully equipped kitchen, microwave, refrigerator and simple cook stove. A dining area plus a sitting area with cable tv with built in vcr and a stereo with CD and tape player. Upstairs is a master bedroom with changing room and bathroom with shower. The house isn't first class but clean and neat. They don't want you flushing paper down the toilet and the water pressure isn't the best but it does have hot water and the shower felt good.

Standing by the gate to the beach

The front of the house faces the beach with a covered porch and nice sandy fenced in yard. A couple of palm trees provide some shade and the beach is about 75 feet from the back door. The fishing village of Celestun is within walking distance of the house and people can be seen walking the beach.

I spent a lot of time naked in and around the house. People walking by didn't seem to pay attention to me although a few did glance over. There are empty lots on both sides of the house and next to the empty lots are houses. One house on the left could see into the yard but no one was staying there while we were. The house to the right was blocked by trees and shrubs. I would stroll out to the water naked at 6AM every morning, only the fishing boats where going out at that time and didn't pay any attention to me. By 6:30 the locals started walking the beach so I would retreat to my yard and have my coffee on the porch naked. If you walk the beach in the opposite direction of town you will find uninhabited section of beach.

Beach - about 1 mile from the house where you can go naked

There I could walk naked for miles and did. I did have to walk about a mile to be on that section but it was worth it. One day I drove down that way and parked the car behind an abandoned restaurant and walked down to the beach. We layed out some towels and I spent my time naked. At one point I noticed a Mexican Army pickup truck parked by my car with soldiers in the back of the truck. So I put on my shorts and walked up to see if there was a problem but before I could get there they waved and drove off. So I guess it was OK to be naked on the beach, I know they saw me.

Fishing Village - shot of the village showing the fishing boat

Celestun is within a flamingo preserve and we were able to get a guided boat tour of the area by a local fisherman.

Flamingos - shot we took on our tour

He picked us up at the beach by our house and drove us around for about 2 hours. It was off season but we did see about 700 flamingo's in one flock. He told us that at peak season you can see 10,000 birds. On another day we drove to Chichen Itza, a Mayan ruins, halfway to Cancun.

Chichen Itza - one of the many buildings at the ruins

Took us about 2 1/2 hours to drive one way but sure was worth it. We didn't speak any Spanish but managed to get along. We only ate dinner out 2 times in Celestun, there are mainly fish resturants and they are right on the beach. We found a big store like our Super K on the way out of Merida and stopped there to get food for the house. You can get some food in Celestun but in small markets.

Sunset - shot we took from the front yard

I have put 2 pictures in the Mexico section of the photo gallery. We had a great time at the house and if you want a relaxing vacation you might want to consider this vacation. The house isn't the greatest but it is liveable and affordable.
