Eden Resorts, Loreto, Mexico

May, 2000

Loreto, Mexico is about an 1 1/2 hour flight from Los Angeles. It's on the Sea of Cortez side of the Baja Peninsula; the scenery is desert, and it's surrounded by the stunning desert mountains of the Sierra Gigante mountain range. Think of Palm Springs with an ocean and you have the setting.

We recently invited some nudist friends of ours to sail with us on our sailboat which has been in Mexico since last October. They had 10 days of vacation to use and our boat was in La Paz, Mexico, just 120 miles from Loreto, so we decided to include a visit to Eden Resorts in our itinerary.

Eden Resorts, which used to be called "Diamond Eden", is an all-inclusive resort hotel that has about 1/4 of it's beach set aside for nude use. We e-mailed the people who run a day-sailing charter boat named "Harmony", that anchors off the resorts beach, and they were kind enough to arrange for us to buy day passes to the resort. This allowed us sleep on the boat but have full use of the resort's facilities including the bars and restaurants. Thank you Harmony!

When you first enter the resort you're almost overwhelmed by the appearance of the lush green grass, palm trees, flowers and other foliage that provides the look and feel of a desert oasis. The landscaping is gorgeous. The buildings have a southwestern style look to them and are well maintained. We only saw one room during our 3 day stay but it had 2 levels, one of which was a sitting room, and was large, comfortable and well decorated.

The resort has 3 restaurants; Mexican, Italian and a covered, outdoor patio restaurant that serves meals buffet style. I'm not a big fan of lengthy food descriptions in trip reports so I'll just say that the Italian restaurant was excellent and the Mexican and Patio restaurants were very good. The service in all 3 restaurants was also very good with the Mexican restaurant rating top billing due to the humorous interactions of the waiters with all the guests. There are bars by each of the two swimming pools and a third bar by the nude beach and jacuzzi. The hotel is all-inclusive, so drinks at any bar are included in the price. We thought the bartenders were faster than at other all-inclusive's we've been to, but the resort wasn't completely full during our stay. And yes, you CAN drink the water....just like at most upscale resorts in Mexico today.

The resorts' dress code allows women to be topless at both of the swimming pools and, in fact, anywhere in the resort except the main lobby and the restaurants. Thongs and G-Strings are OK for both sexes as well. Most, but not all, of the people around the pools wear pretty average bikinis and trunks. The nude beach area does not require nudity, as at Hedonism, so occasionally a clothing-compulsive or two from the pool area will wander over to the nude beach bar to get a drink and gawk a little. They don't usually stay long and were not a problem or even an annoyance to us. In fact, we saw two non-nudist couples wander over to the nude beach with suits on and later decide to return and stay without the suits. The nude beach has a volleyball net and a game was going on one of the days we were there. There are about 10 thatched-roof shade structures on the nude beach called Palapas and, of course, the resort provides beach lounge chairs at all the beach areas. The beach bar at the nude beach also has a large shaded patio for refuge from the sometimes fiercely hot desert sun. During our 3 day stay we estimated that about 30% of the guests at the resort were using the nude beach.

Each night the resort has some sort of entertainment on it's outdoor stage by the swimming pools and we attended all 3 nights we visited. Parts of it were surprisingly good and parts were made up of the somewhat silly but nonetheless, pretty funny, games that are arranged for tourists. All in all we enjoyed the entertainment in the evenings.

Eden Resorts Loreto has golf, sportfishing, Spanish lessons, painting classes, scuba diving, Hobie Cat sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and numerous other things to do each day. Our group just wanted to be beach potatoes so we, at least for this trip, ignored all the other opportunities. We all agreed that we'll be back, though, and next time we'll probably fly down and stay for a week. When we come back one of the things we will definitely do is take a day-sailing charter on the 64' charter sailboat "Harmony" that anchors just offshore from the resort. Nick and Judy of Harmony Cruises run daily charters for both nudes and prudes and many of the charters go to a nearby reef for snorkeling. They are an incredibly enthusiastic and outgoing couple and sailing with them should be a great experience for anyone.

All 4 of us on this trip have been to Club Orient and Hedonism numerous times so comparisons are inevitable....but ratings are difficult. Each has it's own advantages and disadvantages. Club Orient is totally nudist oriented, of course, so that's a big advantage...but it's a long way to fly for us Californians. Hedonism is lots of fun but Eden Resorts appears to be using much of the formula that Hedo uses so successfully... and it's closer to the west coast and has less rain than Jamaica. All in all we think Eden Resorts Loreto is to be commended for bringing the concept of an all-inclusive resort that caters to naturists to Mexico. We'll definitely be back.
