Guadalupe Canyon Hot Springs Report

2005. This is one neat hot springs owned by one neat dude, Arturo Loya; chatter with him in what little Spanish you know and he'll treat you well. There are more than 40 soaking pools, including areas large enough to accommodate groups up to 50 people in size with several pools of different temperatures. Nothing is for sale at BDG (Baranca de Guadalupe) except soda and delicious genuine Mexican meals prepared before your eyes, and at a low price.

Elevation varies from 1,200 feet to more than 2,000 feet. Very high clearance only for the last 2 miles. Better yet is 4wd. If it's been raining heavily, forget about either entering or leaving BDG until the raging waters in the wash subside. There is no electricity or phone and any services must be obtained 96 kilometers away in Mexicali.

In 1940, Arturo and his brothers rode horses into the canyon with their father. They homesteaded the canyon for 30 years and finally convinced the Mexican government to cede 1000 acres of land to them. Hiking around Guadalupe, one will find tumbling (cold) waterfalls, dense palm forests, aboriginal native American caves, wondrous rock formations, stunning vistas, and more. All soaking is by advance reservation, if one wishes to be assured of a soaking site. Most sites have a shade structure, fire pit, picnic table, and nearby outhouse. Summer can be brutally hot; October to late April is best. If one wishes to be nude about the campsite and soak nude too, be sure to ask for a naturist area in advance.
