Playa Naturel, Cancun, Mexico.

Summer 1999.

I've had a few requests from people asking for a report on our recent visit to Playa Naturel just outside Cancun in Mexico....so here goes!!

We are an English couple in our late twentys/early thirtys who have just returned from our second visit to Cancun have been there two years ago and stayed within the hotel zone. This time we again stayed in the hotel zone but hired a jeep to explore further afield. As nudity is not permitted in the hotel zone, Playa Naturel sounded ideal and looks fantastic on its web page.....Is it as nice as it looks??....Believe me, the place does not disappoint...the web site does not do it justice.

It lies about ninety minutes drive south of Cancun off the 307 highway and is easy to find, just follow the directions given on the web site. Its location is stunning, very private and secluded with a fantastic outlook to the sea and reef. You can walk out about half a mile to the reef and still be only chest deep in water, snorkelling around the reef is great.....lots of coloured coral and fish in abundance...turtles and manta rays are common...we came across two large Manta rays ourselves.

Your hosts Mike and Jeannie live permanently on the premises and cannot do enough for you. We were spoilt rotten!! We stayed for two nights and there was another couple there from Philidelphia who were coming to the end of a week long visit.

The accomodation, known as a Palapa, is very comfortable....split into two levels with a living area downstairs with shower and bathroom and the upstairs dominated by a large double bed with fan above. Most of our time was spent either snorkelling in the sea or by the swimming pool (nice and deep) chatting with Mike and Jeannie and listening to Mikes amusing stories and experiences of life in Mexico.

They have two young Mexican lads, Ed and Billy, who work for them and live on the premises as well. They two play their part in making your stay a pleasant one.....acting as barman/waiters/assistant chefs .The evening meal is cooked by a local Mexican called Luis who cooks local recipes from the Yucatan region and the food is excellent. In our two night stay we ate two different types of local soup, steak, fresh lobster and shrimp, and chicken wrapped in banana leaves and baked in the oven. Breakfasts are Mikes speciality and you will not leave the table wanting anything else to eat...trust me on that one!!

Drinks are cheap and happy hour is between three and five....lunch is available along with various snacks but after Mikes breakfast it is unlikely you will be hungry!!

Due to the remoteness of the location a vehicle is strongly recommended so you can get around and explore during the day. The dirt track from the highway to Playa Naturel is a bit bumpy and when we went was only really accessible by a jeep which thankfully we had hired, however as we left this was being smoothed out so if you were to go it would be worth checking the condition of the dirt track before choosing your hire vehicle.

The ruins of Tulum are about ten minutes due south on the highway and worth a visit. Xel - Ha (pronounced shell - ha) an ecological park similar to Xcaret (pronounced ish - caret) is about fifteen minutes north on the highway heading back to Cancun. If you wish to be more adventurous, as we were, head inland to the ruined city of Coba which is about a 45 mins drive deep into the jungle and very interesting.

In summary, Playa Naturel exceeded our expectations and we only wish we could have stayed there longer, the location is fantastic and Mike and Jeannie are excellent hosts and great company.......and no...I"m not on commission!!!!
