Playa Naturel, Cancun, Mexico.

1999

I was in dire need of a relaxing vacation when I went to Playa Naturel. Work had been very hectic, and a lady I had intended to bring with me changed her mind several weeks before, so my stress level was maxed.

That all changed upon my arrival at the gate to Playa Naturel, and the warm greeting by Ed and Mike. I immediately went to my palapa and got comfortable, then wandered to the bar for a beer. It took perhaps 5 minutes for me to realize that this place is truly FANTASTIC! If you are looking for a pricey 5 star resort, with activities and such all planned out, this IS NOT the place for you. If you are looking for a place off the beaten track, that is very comfortable and casual, that is full of pristine beauty, and great folks wanting you to have the best time that you can make of it............ Playa Naturel is exactly what you are looking for.

I don't want to say that Playa Naturel is primitive........for many that will have a negative conotation. You must take into account that electricity is by generator, and therefore used as needed. Still.......the candlelight in the palapas at night is truly relaxing and with the right person would be very romantic as well. I suppose a better word would be rustic, in that the Playa is very comfortable, and blends well with its native surroundings. It is a tropical paradise next to none in my opinion.

I spent a week at Playa Naturel, and it was the most relaxing week of my life. I brought books to read and cds and a personal cd player to keep myself entertained while there. Yet with the snorkelling and diving available, and just plain casual beach combing and loafing, I didn't open a book once, and the cds I shared with Mike and Jeannie as we talked over drinks or dinner. I didn't need to work to find things to keep myself occupied.......Mike, Jeannie and Ed were very attentive to my wants and always kept my mouth wet with a cool drink of my liking and kept my hunger at bay by providing WONDERFUL food. The most work I did for the entire week was work on my tan, and in a week's time I did get very brown.

Occasionally a neighbor or acquaintance of Mike and Jeannie would drop by.......but it was all very casual and relaxed. Nothing to ever worry about in any way.

Mike's breakfasts often left me so full I had to take a mid-morning nap before swimming in the ocean or pool and relaxing in the sun for the rest of the day. Mike's breakfasts are WONDERFUL.......and you definitely won't be hungry for awhile after.

Dinners by Luis were fantastic. The food ranged from fresh seafood, to steaks, to fajitas............ all superbly prepared and presented. As one that does not eat desert often, I ate desert every night at Playa Naturel, and that too was wonderful.

I had requested a favorite local beer called Leon Negra prior to my arrival, and Mike had arranged that the bar was well stocked for me. Between Leon Negra and shots of very good tequila........... my liver was glad to come back home. Yet while I normally don't drink so heavily.........vacation was for relaxation and no time for moderation........and the special attention to my likes at the bar was truly above and beyond the call of duty.

The first day there and the last day before I left I had a massage from a local lady named "Anna Banana" or as Ed says......"Anna plantano". While this massage was not a specific type of massage such as Swedish or Rolffing........Anna is very good at finding all the tension spots and working them out. It was exactly what I needed to make my trip total bliss for relaxing.

Anna also is a dive master(mistress?) close by and I went diving one day. The reef is beautiful, with lots of fish and coral. Is kind of a forest of coral right out in front of Playa Naturel. We did a 40 minute 78 foot dive and had a blast. It is an easy diving location, and one day while I was there Anna reported that a dolphin came in and swam with them. The water is that gorgeous turquoise and very clear........it is not the stunning wall diving that other places boast...........but it truly fun for getting out and communing with nature underwater too.

I got to know Mike and Jeannie pretty well during my stay. They are warm and caring people. The kind of folks you are happy to call friends and so very glad you met them. Just to meet them would be a super reason to go to Playa Naturel.......they are down to earth and can keep you very occupied with great stories of moving down their and building the place. They can give you great advice on where to go and what to do while you are there as well......yet I had such a good time at Playa I only left twice during the week. Once to go to Playa Del Carmen with Mike and Jeannie and once to go to Tulum to get gas in my car. There was just no need or desire to get away from the comfort and relaxation at Playa Naturel.

I guess I have rambled enough........suffice it to say that if you want the most relaxing, casual, carefree vacation you have ever spent, please consider Playa Naturel. You will NOT be disappointed.
