Trip report on Punta Serena, near Manzanillo, México.

Last weekend my wife Anabel and I decided celebrate our 8th anniversary of being together, going to Punta Serena, an adult only, clothing optional resort and SPA, located 4 hours driving from home in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Here is our trip report:

Location: Punta Serena is an adjacent hotel to Bluebay Los Angeles Locos, in the Tenacatita Bay, at the Pacific coast of Mexico in the state of Jalisco. Even when we went driving, the Manzanillo airport is only 28 miles (40 minutes) from the resort. This airport receives direct flights from Los Angeles, Houston and Mexico City.

The Resort: Punta Serena has only 24 rooms (12 individual and 12 suites with a shared living room) divided into “villas” with 2 or 4 rooms. It was inaugurated in 1979, so its age is sometimes difficult to hide. But if you go there, go to enjoy and not for criticize, then you’ll find the building acceptable enough. Built on a cliff facing the ocean, the views are amazing, even there are lots of stairs for going from your room to the restaurant, pool, Jacuzzis or beach. But it is worth it.

Reception: We arrived at 9:00 PM. The resort seemed deserted. A kind security guard invited us to enter the reception office. Two minutes later the manager arrived with two glasses of a non alcoholic cocktail, delicious. Registration was very fast; then Antonio (the manager) gave us a brief tour of the property and explained the characteristics and schedules of the resort, and told us about the clothing optional police, valid only at the beach, pool and poolside and Jacuzzis. Then, we arrived at our room. Spartan, all painted in white and beige, with a king size bed, hard but acceptable. A 21” TV with only 10 or 12 channels, most of them Mexican. A wide closet, small bathroom with a very uncomfortable tile tub, impossible to use without wounding your butt or back. Shower works OK. Water is not drinkable, and has a salty flavor. We used bottled water for teeth brushing.

After being installed at our room, we took off our “city clothes” and put on some gauze clothing without underwear, to go to dinner. We had only asked for a sandwich and a couple of beers that we decided take with us to the room, because we were really tired.

Next morning we went to breakfast at 9:30. Excellent quality of food!, even better service, full of kindness and smiles. Fresh fruits, steaks, eggs, “chilaquiles”, fresh juices, excellent coffee, delicious home made bread. A great selection for breakfast. After breakfast, we went to our room for change our clothes. Anabel put a pareo and I only took off my shirt and stayed in my gauze pants, and we went to the beach.

The beach: It is a completely secluded beach (it’s impossible to arrive from another place other than the hotel’s stairs or by the sea), 400 or 500 yards of fine gray sand, with low inclined bottom. Moderate waves permit both swimming and playing on the shore. A second beach, even more secluded than the main beach is only accessible by walking in the water up to your thighs, between sharp rocks. If you dare, you’ll have as reward a 50 yard beach with nobody else but you and your partner. There is no services at the beach, but 4 white shadow tents and a fresh water shower at the beginning of the stairs. Even, the barman or waiters will prepare for you a cooler with ice, beers, water, juices and some fresh snacks; they offer to carry it, please tip them. The beach is designated by the hotel as “clothing optional”. 50% of people go nude, the other half topfree or fully clothed.

Around 2:00 PM, we returned to the pool area, and asked for a Ceviche and some juices. We needed our stomachs “light” for the Temazcal session. Again, great food and excellent presentation.

The pool: It’s a circular 40’ diameter pool, 5’ depth. Fresh water, not heated but very acceptable even in December. There are about 15 chaise lounges around it.

At 3:00, the lady that directs the Temazcal (a prehispanic sweat lodge) came to the pool area, hitting a prehispanic drum, inviting everyone to the Temazcal. She is a Canadian woman living in Mexico for 6 years ago. She explained to us (3 couples) the ceremony and directed us to the beach for a mud and sand bath beforehand. Then we cleaned up in the ocean, showered with fresh water and returned to the Temazcal. 5 of us entered nude, while a lady preferred to go in with her bikini bottom. 40 minutes later, we finished the bath, and were enveloped in a sheet and a comforter. Then we were offered with a delicious iced tea. After that, we went with the other two couples to one of the Jacuzzis, where we stayed more than 2 hours, after dusk.

The Jacuzzis: There are two “cliff Jacuzzis” for 12 to 16 people each one. One is circular, the other one is oval. The view is amazing, you feel like you are floating in the air. The temperature is very nice (about 90-95°) which permits being in the jacuzzi for hours of chatting without feeling exhausted.

Later, we joined up for dinner. Difficult to describe the flavor of the food and the presentation of the plates. All really exquisite. Even the concept of the resort is all inclusive, you ask “a la carte” for breakfast, lunch and dinner, without limitations. The only “negative” point is the wine: we didn’t like the low quality Californian white wine. Next time we’ll carry our own bottles.

Next day (Sunday) passed very quickly: Breakfast, beach, shower, packing, lunch and check out at 2:30 (usual check out time is noon, but taking in mind we’ve arrived 9:00 PM we could extend it 2.5 hours.

The price: Well, probably you’ll think we’ve paid a fortune. It’s not true, we’ve payed only $2,000. pesos for night for couple (about $176 USD) taxes included, taking advantage of a promotion for Mexican guests.

El pasado fin de semana mi esposa Anabel y yo decidimos celebrar nuestro octavo aniversario de estar juntos, yendo a Punta Serena, un resort y SPA de vestimenta opcional, sólo para adultos, localizado a cuatro horas por carretera desde nuestra casa en Guadalajara, México.

Este es nuestro reporte del viaje: Localización: Punta Serena es un hotel adyacente a Blue Bay Los Angeles Locos, en la Bahía de Tenacatita en la costa del Pacífico Mexicano, en el estado de Jalisco. Aunque nosotros fuimos en automóvil, el aeropuerto de Manzanillo está a 45 kilómetros (40 minutos) del resort. Este aeropuerto recibe vuelos directos de Los Ángeles, Houston y la ciudad de México. El Resort:
Punta Serena tiene sólo 24 habitaciones (12 estándar y 12 suites con una sala compartida) divididas en villas con 2 o 4 habitaciones cada una. Fue inaugurado en 1979, por lo que la edad del edificio es a veces difícil de ocultar. Pero si tú vas allá con el ánimo de disfrutar y no de criticar, encontrarás unas instalaciones más que aceptables. Construido en un risco de cara al océano, la vista es impresionante. Eso sí, hay muchas escaleras para ir de tu habitación al restaurante, alberca, jacuzzis o playa. Pero vale la pena el ejercicio.

Recepción:
Llegamos el viernes a las 9 de la noche. El hotel parecía desierto. Un amable guardia de seguridad nos invitó a entrar a la oficina de recepción. Dos minutos después llegó el gerente con dos cocteles sin alcohol, deliciosos. El registro fue sumamente rápido; luego Antonio (el gerente) nos dio un pequeño tour por la propiedad y nos explicó las características y horarios necesarios, así como la política de vestimenta opcional, válida solamente en la alberca, jacuzzis y playa. Finalmente nos instalamos en nuestra habitación. Austera, espartana, toda pintada en blanco y beige, con una cama king size dura, pero aceptable. Una televisión de 21" con sólo 10 o 12 canales, la mayoría nacionales. Un closet amplio, baño pequeño con una incómoda tina de azulejos, imposible de usar sin lastimarse las nalgas o la espalda. La regadera funciona bien. El agua no es potable, tiene un gusto salobre. Tuvimos que usar agua embotellada aún para cepillarnos los dientes.

Una vez instalados en la habitación, nos quitamos nuestra "ropa de ciudad" y nos pusimos atuendos de manta sin ropa interior, para ir a cenar. Sólo pedimos un sándwich y un par de cervezas que preferimos llevarnos a la habitación, puesto que estábamos realmente cansados.

La mañana del sábado fuimos a desayunar a las 9:30. ¡Excelente calidad de alimentos!, mejor aún el servicio, lleno de amabilidad y sonrisas. Frutas y jugos frescos, carnes, huevos, chilaquiles, excelente café, delicioso pan hecho "en casa". Un gran desayuno. Regresamos a nuestra habitación a cambiarnos. Anabel se puso un pareo y yo simplemente me quité la camisa y me quedé en mi pantalón de manta. Tomamos bloqueadores solares, libro y nos fuimos a la playa.

La playa: Es completamente aislada, imposible llegar por otra parte que no sea por las escaleras del hotel o por el mar. 400 o 500 metros de fina arena gris, con fondo de muy bajo declive. El oleaje es moderado, y permite tanto jugar como nadar. Una segunda playa, más aislada aún que la principal es accesible únicamente si te atreves a caminar con el agua hasta los muslos en medio de filosas rocas. Si te atreves, la recompensa es una playita de 50 metros con nadie más que tú y tu pareja, para echar a volar tus fantasías. No hay servicios en la playa, como no sean 4 toldos de sombra y una regadera en el inicio de las escaleras. De cualquier forma, el barman y los meseros te pueden preparar una hielera con cervezas, hielo, agua, jugos y snacks; ellos se ofrecen a llevarla hasta la playa, si aceptas, no olvides darles una generosa propina. La playa está designada por el hotel como de vestimenta opcional. La mitad de la gente está desnuda, el resto va topless o completamente "vestida".

Alrededor de las 2:00 PM regresamos al área de la alberca y pedimos un ceviche y unos jugos. Necesitábamos nuestros estómagos ligeros para la sesión de temascal. De nuevo, gran comida y excelente presentación.

La alberca: Es circular, de unos 12 metros de diámetro y 1.50 de profundidad. El agua está fresca, no tiene calefacción pero no la necesita aún en diciembre. Hay unos 15 camastros a su alrededor.

A las 3:00, la mujer que dirige el temascal vino al área de la alberca, tocando un tambor prehispánico, invitando al temascal. Ella es canadiense y vive en México desde hace 6 años. Nos explicó a las tres parejas que decidimos participar todo con respecto a la ceremonia que iba a tener lugar. Luego nos llevó a la playa para un baño de lodo y arena, muy divertido; nos lavamos en el océano y luego en la regadera, para regresar al temascal. 5 de nosotros entramos desnudos, mientras una de las mujeres decidió conservar la parte baja de su bikini. 40 minutos más tarde salimos del baño y fuimos envueltos en sábanas y cobijas, y nos invitaron un delicioso té helado de limón. Luego nos fuimos con las otras dos parejas a uno de los Jacuzzis, en donde estuvimos platicando hasta después del anochecer.

Los Jacuzzis: Hay dos, espectaculares, construidos en el risco, para unas 12 a 16 personas cada uno. Uno es circular, el otro es ovalado. La vista es impresionante, uno se siente como flotando en el aire. La temperatura del agua es muy agradable (entre unos 32 y 35°) que permite estar por horas sin sentirse exhausto.

Más tarde, nos reunimos para cenar. Es difícil describir el sabor de los alimientos y la presentación de los platillos. Todo realmente exquisito. Aunque el concepto del resort es "todo incluido", tú pides a la carta para el desayuno, comida y cena, sin limitaciones. El único punto "negativo" fue el vino: un blanco de California bastante mediocre. La solución es fácil: llevaremos nuestras botellas para la próxima.

El siguiente día, domingo, pasó muy rápido: Desayuno, playa, regaderazo, empacar maletas, comida y check out a las 2:30 (usualmente la hora de salida es a las 12:00, pero tomando en cuenta que llegamos muy tarde, nos permitieron extendernos dos horas y media).

El precio: Bueno, probablemente ustedes pensarán que pagamos una fortuna. Nada más lejos de la realidad. Pagamos $2,000. pesos por noche por pareja (aprox. $176. USD) impuestos incluidos, aprovechando una promoción para huéspedes mexicanos.

En conclusión, regresaremos muy pronto. El resort necesita mejorar algunas cosas, pero lo esencial está perfecto.
