PUNTA SERENA,
SECOND TRIP.

From December 18 to 20, 2005, my wife Anabel and I went to Punta Serena, after exactly one year from being there for the first time. To our surprise, there weren't any rooms available when I called in the first days of the month. We were put on a waiting list, and at the same time, we reserved in the sister resort Blue Bay, paying a special rate that would permit us have meals and make use of installations of Punta Serena. It wasn't perfect, but was a good deal. To our good luck, two days before departing, Aurora, from the reservations department, called me to say that our room in Punta Serena would be available.

So here is a quick evaluation of the resort:

Staff: From the new manager, Alejandra, to the maid, passing through every waiter, bar tender, masseuse or security guard, all were extremely kind and efficient.

Building: Keeping in mind the resort is 26 years old, it is acceptably maintained; we observed some new furniture in the bar and restaurant areas, and new king size mattresses (not the best, but quite comfortable). Gardens are well manicured; SPA and GYM are small but very nice. There is a panoramic veranda for open-air massages and a games room with a pool table and some domino and chess games.

Meals and Beverages: From the fresh cocktail they give you at your arrival to all meals and beverages, we can respond in one word: excellent! Presentation of the dishes is as good as in a three-star restaurant, including the freshness and flavor of them. Portions are small, but for us it's an advantage, so you may enjoy a 4 or 5 plates dinner without being overcharged.

Pool and Jacuzzis: The 30 feet round pool has no heater; but being winter, water temperature is very acceptable. We swam twice but never saw other swimmers. Cliff Jacuzzis are one of the main attractions of the resort. Temperature is simply perfect, and both are one of the best places for relaxation.

Beach: You need to go down 114 steps on the stairway to access the 700 feet private beach. With fine dark sand and moderate waves this beach deserves a five star qualification. Twice we had the opportunity of seeing some dolphins less than 100 feet from us. Water is warm and clear; bottom has a very moderated slope. It has three beach tents, which give some shadow. 8 fiberglass chaise lounges are not the most comfortable way to take the sun, but… We opted for bringing our own beach mats and umbrellas, so we were very comfortable.There is a smaller beach towards some rocks, with much more privacy that this, but we didn't adventure there, because you had to walk on a rocky bottom with the water up to your waistline: we were afraid of having an accident.

Temazcal: we didn't have the opportunity of enjoy the temazcal session, but were informed that it takes place every Saturday afternoon, and it's managed by a local feminine "chaman".

SPA: We can't talk from first hand about it, but it seems to be very good and the menu of options is quite wide. Honestly, our budget was not enough to enjoy some massages or body treatments.

Crowd: Contrasting with our first visit last year, most of guests preferred being by themselves. It was really difficult to start a conversation with them, some even didn't respond to our greetings. Hotel was completely booked, with 3 American and 21 Mexican couples, most of them from Mexico City (probably it explains their conduct). We never saw two couples sharing a table at the restaurant. Once, before dinner, we decided go to the Jacuzzi: there was a couple inside, we said "good evening" but didn't obtain one word from them; they hug each other pretending we were not there. It was initially disappointing, but later we took advantage of the situation and have dedicated ourselves one to each other. Ages went from early 20's to early 50's.

Nudism: The resort defines itself as an adult only, with clothing optional pool, Jacuzzis and beach. Due to our experience last year and our particular preferences, we didn't pack a swimsuit. At the beach all men and most of women were nude, the rest of them were top free and only one was fully dressed. In the Jacuzzis some were nude, some not. Around the pool most were fully clothed, a couple of women top free, contrasting with us, fully nude.

Entertainment: There are no entertainment activities at the resort. You have access to their sister resort Blue Bay, a familiar hotel that has a disco, tennis courts, nightly theme shows and a specialties restaurant. We didn't take advantage of those facilities. The night we visited the games room it was completely empty. There are some tables for board games, a couple of domino sets and a chess board; and a pool table with 3 very old sticks and a set of balls. We decided play "strip pool"; nobody appeared in more than one hour that we spent there. BTW: I won.

Value: We went in high season, prices were very affordable, and are incredible low during low season. You receive more for the money you spend.

How to arrive: Living in Guadalajara, Mexico, Punta Serena is 4 hours drive from home, along a very good road. From other cities you can fly to Manzanillo's airport (ZLO) which has direct flights from Los Angeles, Houston and Mexico City; airport is 45 minutes from the resort. Puerto Vallarta's airport (PVR) is 2.5 hours from Punta Serena, but has lots of flights from many cities in USA and Mexico.

SEGUNDO VIAJE.

Del 18 al 20 de diciembre de 2005 mi esposa Anabel y yo fuimos a Punta Serena, después de un año exacto de haber estado allí por primera vez. Para nuestra sorpresa, no había habitaciones disponibles cuando llamé tres semanas antes para reservar. Fuimos puestos en lista de espera y al mismo tiempo, reservamos en el hotel hermano Blue Bay, pagando una tarifa especial que nos permitiría tomar los alimentos y hacer uso de las instalaciones de Punta Serena. No sería perfecto, pero era un buen trato. Para nuestra buena suerte, dos días antes de partir, Aurora, del departamento de reservaciones, me llamó informándome que tendríamos habitación en Punta Serena.

Aquí está una rápida evaluación del resort:

Staff: Desde la nueva gerente, Alejandra hasta la camarista, pasando por cada mesero, cantinero, masajista o guardia de seguridad, todos fueron extremadamente amables y eficientes.

Instalaciones: Tomando en cuenta que el edificio tiene 26 años de edad, está aceptablemente mantenido. Vimos nuevo mobiliario en diversas áreas, incluyendo restaurante y bar, y nuevos colchones en las habitaciones (no los mejores, pero bastante confortables). Los jardines están impecablemente mantenidos, el SPA y gimnasio son pequeños pero muy agradables. Hay una veranda panorámica para masajes al aire libre y un cuarto de juegos con mesa de billar, dominó y ajedrez.

Alimentos y Bebidas: Desde el fresco coctel que nos ofrecieron al llegar hasta todos los alimentos y bebidas, podemos resumirlos en una palabra: ¡excelentes!. La presentación de los platillos es tan buena como en un restaurante de lujo, por no hablar de la frescura y el sabor de ellos. Las porciones son pequeñas, lo cual fue una ventaja para nosotros que pudimos disfrutar de una cena de 4 o 5 platos sin terminar sobrecargados.

Alberca y Jacuzzis: La alberca circular de 10 metros de diámetro no tiene calefacción; pero aún siendo invierno, la temperatura del agua es muy aceptable. Nadamos dos veces pero nunca vimos otros nadadores. Los jacuzzis en los riscos son uno de los principales atractivos del resort. Su temperatura es simplemente perfecta y ambos son uno de los mejores lugares para la relajación.

Playa: Se necesitan bajar 114 escalones para acceder a la playa privada de 250 metros de largo. Con su arena fina y oleaje moderado merece una calificación de 5 estrellas. Dos veces tuvimos la oportunidad de ver delfines a menos de 30 metros de distancia. El agua es tibia y clara; el fondo tiene una pendiente muy suave. Hay tres toldos que proporcionan cierta sombra. 8 camastros de fibra de vidrio no son la más cómoda forma de tomar el sol, pero... Nosotros optamos por llevar nuestras propias esteras y sombrillas y estuvimos muy a gusto. Hay una playa mucho más pequeña después de unas rocas, con mucha mayor privacidad que ésta, pero no nos aventuramos a ella, puesto que hay que cruzar a través de un fondo rocoso con el agua hasta la cintura: temimos un accidente.

Temazcal: No tuvimos esta vez la opoortunidad de disfrutar de la sesión de temascal, pero fuimos informados que sigue teniendo lugar cada sábado en la tarde y está dirigido por una "chamana" local.

SPA: No podemos hablar de él de primera mano, aunque parece ser muy bueno y el menú de servicios es sumamente amplio. Honestamente, nuestro presupuesto no era suficiente para permitirnos algunos masajes o tratamientos corporales.

Concurrencia: En contraste con nuestra primera visita el año pasado, esta vez la mayoría de los huéspedes preferían estar aislados. Fue realmente difícil iniciar una conversación con ellos, algunos de quienes ni siquiera respondían a un saludo. El hotel estaba completamente lleno, con 3 parejas de norteamericanos y 21 de mexicanos, muchos de ellos del D. F., lo que tal vez explicara su conducta. (Por favor no me tomen como un provinciano cerrado, pero hechos son hechos). Una vez, antes de la cena, decidimos ir al jacuzzi: había una pareja dentro, dijimos "buenas noches" sin obtener una sola palabra de ellos; se abrazaron ignorando nuestra presencia allí. Esto fue al principio desilusionante, pero más tarde tomamos ventaja de la situación y nos dedicamos mucho más el uno al otro. Las edades de los huéspedes fluctuaban desde los tempranos 20's hasta los tempranos 50's.

Nudismo: El resort se define a sí mismo como sólo para adultos, con alberca, jacuzzis y playa de ropa opcional. Debido a nuestra experiencia hace un año y a nuestras preferencias particulares, ni siquiera empacamos un traje de baño.En la playa todos los hombres y la mayoría de las mujeres estuvieron desnudos. El resto de ellas iban top-free y sólo una estuvo todo el tiempo completamente "vestida". En los jacuzzis algunos estaban desnudos, otros no. Alrededor de la alberca, la mayoría estaban vestidos, un par de mujeres top-free, contrastando con nosotros, los únicos desnudos.

Entretenimiento: No hay actividades de entretenimiento en el resort. Los huéspedes tienen acceso al hotel hermano Blue Bay, un hotel familiar adjunto que tiene una disco, canchas de tenis, cenas con shows temáticos y un restaurante de especialidades. No las utilizamos. La noche que visitamos el cuarto de juegos estaba completamente vacío. Hay algunas mesas para juegos de tablero, un par de dominós y un ajedrez, además de una mesa de billar con tres viejos tacos y un set de bolas. Decidimos jugar un "strip pool"; nadie apareció por allí en más de una hora que estuvimos. Por cierto, yo gané.

Valor: Aún cuando fuimos en temporada alta, los precios son bastante accesibles, y son increíblemente bajos en temporada baja. El huésped recibe, sin dudas, más de lo que gasta.

Cómo llegar: Viviendo en Guadalajara, México, Punta Serena está a cuatro horas por carretera, por un excelente camino. De otras ciudades se puede volar al aeropuerto de Manzanillo, que tiene vuelos directos desde Los Ángeles, Houston y México, D. F.; el aeropuerto está a 45 minutos del hotel. El aeropuerto de Puerto Vallarta está a 2 horas y media de Punta Serena, y tiene muchos vuelos desde las principales ciudades de Estados Unidos y México.
