Tulum Beaches Report (Mexico)

My oldest children Gabriela (15), Manuel (9) and I spent 4 days at Tulum Beaches, about 80 miles south Cancún.

The stretch of land/resorts is called “Riviera Ecosolar”, and consists of a strip of 6 miles of small hotels, cabins, and “posadas” that generate their electricity using solar panels, and wind or gasoline generators, along one of the most beautiful white sand beaches I’ve seen in my life.

Even the beach is on open sea, waves are moderated thanks to the coral reef that runs parallel to the coast, 1000 ft into the ocean. There are places for all budgets, from very cheap cabanas without a bath, to “rustically luxurious” rooms, built following ancient Mayan designs.

We stayed at “Cabañas Kin-Ha”, which are not really cabanas, but rustic hotel rooms, nothing recommendable. The trouble was, due the holiday season, all rooms in the area were completely full. However, we had the opportunity to visit several other places, having breakfast, lunch and dinner at hotels like Cabañas Copal, Zamas and Posada Margherita, waiting for the New Year at the incredible beach bar of Playa Paraíso. Even my daughter doesn’t practice nudism (teenager ideas, I think), she respects my way for sunbathing, shared with my wife and my 3 male kids

I knew that toplessness is very accepted at Riviera Maya beaches, but to my surprise and happiness, nudity is also frequently seen there, even you only find from 5 to 15% of nudists at a given moment, depending on the time of the day and the hotel in front of the beach. For example, in the section of beach that starts to the north in front of Maya Tulum Resort (the most luxurious and expensive), walking southbound for about half mile to “our” Kin-Ha, there were between 2 and 3 nudists in the first hours of the morning (when I usually take a daily walk), increasing in numbers to around 15 between 1 and 3 PM. Top free ladies are about half of the crowd.

Cabañas Copal defines itself as a clothing optional facility, and even we couldn’t obtain lodging there, we went there to have dinner our first evening, breakfast the next morning, and spent a couple of hours at the beach in front of the resort. The beach is very nice, about 300 yards long, limited by rocks in the north and south extremes, so it looks like a private beach. Nudity there is higher than the average, at least 20% of the people there were “au naturel”, while a vast majority of women were top free.

We went to Playa Paraiso, which has a very nice beach bar, lots of huts and chaise lounges, and some bungalows. The beach is probably the best of all, but we didn’t stay there because we didn’t see nudists there, and I had decided not to wear my swimsuit during my vacation. Again, top freedom was the norm for 40% of the women. We had dinner one night at Zamas, delicious pizzas and some very good Italian dishes. The last morning of our stay we had breakfast at Posada Margherita, our neighbors, resulting in the best meal of all our vacation; we regretted not having gone more times. Del 28 de diciembre al 1 de enero, mis hijos mayores Gabriela (15), Manuel (9) y yo pasamos cuatro días en las playas de Tulum, a unos 130 kilómetros al sur de Cancún.

e autonombran la “Riviera Ecosolar”, y consiste en una franja de 10 kilómetros de pequeños hoteles, cabañas y posadas, que generan su electricidad usando paneles solares y generadores de viento o gasolina, a lo largo de una de las playas de arena blanca más hermosas que haya yo visto en mi vida.

Aunque la playa es mar abierto, las olas son moderadas gracias al arrecife que corre paralelo a la costa, unos 300 metros mar adentro. Hay lugares para todos los presupuestos, desde muy económicas cabañas sin baño, hasta cuartos “rústicamente lujosos”, construidos siguiendo antiguos diseños mayas.

Nosotros nos hospedamos en Cabañas “Kin-Ha”, que no son realmente cabañas, sino unos rústicos cuartos de hotel, poco o nada recomendables. El problema fue que con la temporada vacacional todas las habitaciones del área estaban ocupadas. Sin embargo, tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar diversos lugares, desayunando, comiendo y cenando en hoteles como Cabañas Copal, Zamas y Posada Margherita, y recibiendo el Año Nuevo en el increíble bar de Playa Paraíso. Aunque mi hija no practica el nudismo (ideas de adolescente, creo yo), ella respeta mi manera de tomar el sol, que comparto con mi esposa y mis tres hijos varones.

Yo sabía que el topless era muy aceptado en las playas de la Riviera Maya, pero para mi sorpresa y alegría, el nudismo es también bien visto allí, aunque uno encuentra sólo de un 5 a un 15% de nudistas en determinado momento, dependiendo de la hora del día y frente a qué hotel está la playa. Por ejemplo, en la sección de playa que empieza al norte frente al Maya Tulum Resort (el más caro y lujoso), caminando hacia el sur por alrededor de 800 metros hacia “nuestro” Kin-Ha, había entre 2 y 3 nudistas en las primeras horas de la mañana (cuando yo acostumbraba hacer mis caminatas diarias), incrementando el número hasta unos 15 entre la una y las tres de la tarde. Las mujeres topless eran alrededor de la mitad para esa hora.

Cabañas Copal se define a sí misma como una instalación de vestimenta opcional; así que aunque no pudimos hospedarnos allí, fuimos a cenar durante nuestra primera noche, a desayunar a la mañana siguiente y estuvimos dos días durante unas dos horas en la playa frente al resort. La playa es muy agradable, de unos 300 metros de longitud, limitada por rocas al sur y norte, lo que la hace aparecer como una playa privada. El nudismo allí es un poco más alto que el promedio, al menos 20% de la gente estaba “au naturel”, mientras que la vasta mayoría de las mujeres hacían topless.

Fuimos también a Playa Paraíso, que tiene un muy agradable bar de playa, muchas palapas y camastros, y algunos bungalows. La playa es probablemente la mejor de todas, pero no nos quedamos porque al parecer el nudismo no se practica allí, y yo había decidido no usar mi traje de baño en todas las vacaciones. Una vez más, el topless es la norma para al menos el 40% de las mujeres. Cenamos una noche en Zamas, excelentes pizzas en horno de leña y algunos buenos platillos italianos. La última mañana de nuestra estadía desayunamos en Posada Margherita, nuestros vecinos, resultando en el mejor alimento que comimos en toda la vacación; nos arrepentimos de no haber ido antes.
