Formentera Beaches, Fuerteventura Report

Formentera Beach report, Fuerteventura, Spain

My son and I were in Corralajo in April 2000 and I will be there again in December with my wife. We booked accommodation from one of the two brochures specialising in nudist accommodation, Dune Leisure. Another company (Canarian Dreams) targets its marketing of some of the same properties on windsurfers as well as nudists and has its brochure on the internet. Sunseekers also books several properties common to the other companies. The 5 apartments in the complex were not nudist, but in the second week we were there most of the tourists were.

Since most of the residents who were in the apartments had booked accomodation from specialist tour operators and were probably nudists, I frequently used the pool when no-one was around. On one occasion, I was interrupted by another resident. I apologised for my nakedness, and said I hoped she didn't mind. She explained that she and her husband went naked, but only on the beach and in the privacy of their roof terrace. While we were talking, the lady in another apartment (whom I didn't think would object since she used the pool area topless) came back from the beach and was astonished to see that I was naked.

"If you don't have any problem with the ah with the..er .. " she said, and disappeared. A few minutes later she came back with her husband, holding her towel in front of her, and for the rest of the week, they also used the pool area nude, frequently and unselfconsiously.

Unlike Playa del Ingles, where there are separate beach loungers for nudists, with hundreds of both dressed and undressed people walking past, the main Corralejo beach is entirely CO. While only a few people on each of the groups of beach loungers are naked, they co-exist with the others. You can undress as soon as you are on the beach without waiting till you see other naked people. There is no problem even in walking past one of the hotels which is quite close to the water, because the service areas are next to the sea and surrounded by a high wall. Unlike Playa del Ingles, however, I did not see any naked people at the beach bars.

On the other side of the busy main road you can walk over a rather barren sandy area for miles without being near enough anyone to tell if they are dressed, and if you can't see what they are wearing, they can't see what you are not. I thought I saw two people ahead of me, who appeared to be dressed, but when I got closer it became apparent that it was only a black goat.

The town beach is the only one that is sandy with good access in all states of the tide. I was told that old ladies throw stones at you if you swim naked on this beach. Unfortunately I was only told this after I had taken a swim there very early in the morning and found that my clothes and towel had been dumped in the water while I was swimming.

Also close to the town is Galera beach, and though I swam here nude every day, I did not feel comfortable out of the water, since no-one else was naked and the beach was quite busy except very early in the morning. The two smaller beaches to the South were not so busy, and though they are overlooked from the path, it is possible to find a quiet spot.

On one of these, seeing that nearly all the women were topless, I guessed they wouldn't mind if I was nude. The young (Canarian?) woman lying next me went for a swim and then took her wet pants off while she smoked a cigarette before getting dressed, so obviously she didn't object to my nakedness.

We know from surveys that more and more people are nudists themselves, or don't object to others being naked on the beach. I'm convinced that some people don't notice the discreet nudist anyway. Many of those who don't approve won't take any action, especially if they feel they are in a minority, because they are conformists. Perhaps all beaches can become CO if we are discreet and non confrontational.
