Fuerteventura. Superb beaches....the biggest is on the east side just south of Corralejo (which is at the northernmost tip). Nudity is extremely relaxed on most beaches however (except around Caleta de Fustes) which is where a lot of tour operators go to. I understand that the beach there does have a CO section, but it's not particularly good.

Like I say, the 'Dunas de Corralejo' is a beach about 10km long, you can park your car anywhere along, undress and freely wander down to the beach with no restrictions. Further south there are 'hundreds' of beaches, often with absolutely nobody on them.

There is a down side however, although we were there about 6 years ago and things may have improved...the 'night life was a bit barren to say the least and you had the feeling that they were after ever single penny you owned. Just an impression, however. The rest of the island is a bit, well, desolate is probably a good word and not as geared up for tourism as, say, Lanzarote. You do, however, get the sun...and how! You are as south as the Saraha desert and in june/july/august you need SERIOUS sunblock.

Could you expand on that a little. What percentage of people remain nude... on average? Is nudity okay on Corralejo? I've read about a wildlife reserve that is also an unofficial nudist park. Do you know anything about that? It's in the north, I believe. Purely from a naturist perspective, would you say the beaches were more tolerant in the north or the south?

Ooops, I missed that bit. It answers some of my questions, and it sounds very good {s}. John, I'm looking for a place where I can walk... nude!! A place where I can enjoy the scenery and the wildlife of the area... nude!! Would Fuerteventura provide those things for me?

How long would it take to drive from north to south? Is it a reasonable day trip?

That doesn't bother me in the least.

It's sounding better and better all the time {S}.

We intend going in May. I hope there's some sun then too.

..actually, I think the 'Wildlife Park' is actually the beach at Corralejo. No, seriously, they are quite proud of it...I think "Area of conservation" (ie the Dunes) has been retranslated into "Wildlife Park". You have the beach which as I say is some 10Km long comprising long stretches of white sand then little rocky outcrops and little secluded bays. Something for everyone. About every, say 1/2 mile or so (keeping the distance units international!) there is a bit of a car park where you can park up and walk down the path onto the beach there. Nudity seems simply not an issue. I walked back to the car from the beach on several occasions without bothering to dress, you see people walking nude along the road to get to the next bit of the beach etc etc. All the beaches have little stone enclosures to protect from the breeze/wind....often referred to by the English as 'the bunkers' and where you can usually find a good selection of second hand beach towels.

If you get a map, the part I'm referring to is from the Hotel Tres Islas on Playa del Mendano to as far south as Costa Roja or Playa de la Cazuela. The road is actually the main highway from the capitol Puerto del Rosario along the coast to Corralejo. The 'beach' is known as La Olivia. There is also a little train that runs from Corralejo to the top end of the beach.

As far as walking, hmmmm, well, put it like this, it may be called a "Wildlife park", but there ain't much wildlife. If you conjour up in your mind the scenes from Lawrence of Arabia, you've just about got it. The Dunas are, well sand, sand, and lots more sand, I suspect actally blown over from the Saraha itself over the last few thousand years. This may be a preservation area, but I think it's only to stop people building on it...or maybe knicking it for a few million tons of cement. lol!

On the beaches, I didn't see any difference between the south or the north, or the east or west. The common factor seems to be the beach, any beach, but away from any town. I think Claudia has the perfect phrase " if it wasn't a nude beach before I got there etc etc.... However, I didn't see any nudity on any 'tourist' beach associated with towns.

May will be HOT, very hot, you have no worries whatsoever on that score. It was May when we went last. If you go, however, don't get worried about the weather in the mornings. Invariably, first thing is cloudy and when you wake up and look out you think WHAT!!! This burns off very very quickly and usually by about 10.30 it's burning you as well. Teneriffe, we did foolishly in July...never again!

Sunseekers do trips there, if you send for the brochure it describes the place pretty accurately. However, note that there is no actual naturist accommodation or centres or clubs or anything like that on the Island, as far as I am aware. Again, I guess a call to Sunseekers will get you up to date in that respect.

Okay, that makes a lot of sense. Is there no vegetation?

It says in the World Guide: "The island has not yet been commercialized, the beaches are unspoilt and the locals are very friendly."

Hmmm, well, OK. My personal view is that although it's not yet been commercialised, it's trying very hard to. I didn't get a GREAT feeling from the place and the people, I kind of got the impression that they were after as much of your money as they could possible get. Probably a huge over generalisation, and please forgive me any Spanish that may look in here, but I got the impression that the view was "mainland Spain has lived on the tourist for enough years.,..now it's our turn". Maybe I'm being unjust, but that was my overall impression. That said, there's probably not a better place for attitude to naturism in Southern Europe, so in our book I guess they are the good guys *G*.

Yes, the beaches are really, really unspoilt. The people...see above.
