Fuerteventura, Canary Islands
October 1998.
Starting from Corralejo in the North of the island going clockwise, there are extensive sand dunes for about five miles with two large hotel complexes in the centre. Either side, volcanic rock circular windbreaks have been built by sunbathers to shelter from the winds that predominate this stretch of the coast. Nudity is in the majority on the full length of this part of the coast with the possible exception of the hotel beaches (we didn't visit them).
The next sandy beach we saw but didn't visit is just North of the airport called Playa Blanca, from the road it looked quiet and could have potential.
Caleta de Fuste beach is sand and packed with sunbeds and tourists (not for us). Though the yacht club by the marina has an excellent restaurant on the first floor.
Continuing South the next decent stretch of beach is the wonderful Playa de Sotavento de Jandia almost at the end of the island. This beach is a series of long sandy bays covering almost ten miles, each one reached by dirt tracks from the main road. Our favourite beach was just past Casas Risco del Paso where a sharp left off the road gives superb views as you wind your way down the track to park almost on the beach. If you have forgotten your windbreak there are a few rock circles and bushes and dunes but you need to get there early to get the best sites although the wind is less than the Northern part of the island! Nudity is almost total except at weekends when its 50/50 and there is about three miles of beach to walk and swim. There is a small cafe on the edge of the beach about half way along for a snack and a pint of ice cold Tropical beer!
The beaches further down towards Jandia, we hope to check out next time also the West coast of the Southern peninsular, Playa de Cofete, near the deserted town of Cofete which according to the details on the back of our map is 100% nudist. When the sea is calm, the diving is said to be the best in the Canaries as a natural marine park exists a few feet from the waters edge.
As for the rest of the island, the "playa's" seem to be rock with a couple of black sand that don't look particularly inviting and with such good beaches at each end of the island there is little point.
