Lanzarote, Canary Islands

November 1998.

In late November we returned from yet another holiday to Lanzarote, the weather for the week was an acceptable 75 degrees. We stayed at Playa Blanca which is in the southeast of the island very close to the Papagyo peninsula where some of the best beaches can be found.

Papagayo Beach

We have been going to the Papagayo beaches for a number of years and there has never been any changes, but this year changes have been very noticeable. If you have ever been there you'll know you could drive off road any where.

The first noticeable change is that you now enter a national park but there is a slight charge of 500pts approx £2.50, next the roads/tracks have now been edged with large rocks, so there's no more driving off road, but the tracks are still as rough as ever, there are now signs indicating which beach you are going to. There are common car parks which are walled with signs indicating the name of the beach and it's direction. There has been a big effort to tidy this area with large waste bins in each car park and we think beach cleaners, previously on our last visits you could also find people camping and sleeping on the beaches but this now seems as if this has stopped, the whole area appears to be security patrolled.

There appears to be some minor building work going in the area of Playa Mujeres, what's going to happen here we would really like to know. I hope it doesn't make the area too commercial.

There are approximately 5 clean white sandy beaches, Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo, Playa del Papagayo, Caleta del Congrio, Puerto Muelas, were nudism is normal. We spent most of our time on the Playa del Papagayo not too windy and the sea seemed just a little warmer; the majority of people were nude with the occasional clothed group.

Overall a good holiday location for the sun in November.
