Tenerife Canary Islands

Tenerife - 1998

We just returned from Tenerife in the Canaries...My wife and I spent 4 days on two nude beaches near Playa de las Americas...

The best is near El Medano about 20 KM north of Playa de las Americas. We spent two afternoons there in the company of 250-300 naked people from all over Europe. On the second day, as it was Easter week, the majority were Spanish, but we encountered brits, Germans, Danes and Americans. (Editor's Note: El Medano - Playa Tejita West, is a big public beach, with nude bathing accepted at the west end.)

To get there, drive north on the freeway to the exit after the airport (El Medano) and go toward the coast. About a KM from the town, turn right on a paved road (TF 6214) -- go 2.5 KM until you see a rough dirt road going left (there are usually plenty of cars there). After parking, follow the path/road toward the large hill - go past the textile beach, over a large rock hill and you will find the sandy area. Beach chairs are 300 ptas for the day (until 6 pm). Bring a snorkle if you have it and enjoy!

The other beach, and most accessible one, is at Los Christianos. Go past the Hotel Gran Arona toward the large hill north of town. Follow the beach past a narrow cove until you get on the rocky beach. Pick a spot on the beach or in one of the homemade stone enclosures (for protection from the wind and some privacy). The far end below the rocky area is a male gay area, so you may not want to go there, if that is a problem. There were 20-30 nudists along the beach when we were there. The rocks are a bit rough, so wear shoes or sandals!
