Inner City Hot Tubs, Portland, Oregon Report.

May 2002.

I visited Portland’s Inner City Hot Tubs during a trip to the Northwest in early May. The hot tubs are part of a larger wellness center located close to downtown Portland. The tubs, showers, and sauna are mostly co-ed and clothing is optional. I have been there several times during the past two years and only once was anyone wearing a suit. It’s men only on Mondays from 7-11 p.m. and women only on Fridays from 7-11 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. At other times, it is co-ed.

The wellness center is located in the 2900 block of N.E. Everett Street in a group of converted frame homes on a residential street. Signs in front direct you to a walk down entrance and lobby. They charge $10 for an hour’s time. You can stay an extra half-hour for another $10. From the lobby, you pass through a curtain and enter the undressing area with cubby holes for your clothes. They will hold valuables for you at the front desk.

Past the cool down bench, you see sinks and three open showers. Two private unisex toilets are also in that area. Across from the showers is a dry sauna that seats about 10 people in relative comfort. Up the short stairway are two large outdoor hot tubs. The tubs are fenced but roofless, so you and your tubmates have privacy but with a view of the sky during daylight and the stars at night. There are lights around the fence and places to hang your towel. Also, there is an old bathtub for a cold dip if you are so inclined. The large hot tubs are checked regularly for chemicals and temperature and are very comfy.

The mix of customers is good. There are couples along with single males and females in generally good balance. Most of the customers are locals, because the tubs are not well known outside the area. I’ve seen all ages of adults during my visits, from 20somethings to 70somethings. I find the customers are friendly, but not annoying if you just want to soak. It is refreshing to go from shower to hot tub to shower to sauna, then cool a bit and do it again.

They offer chiropractic services, massage therapy, and other amenities at additional expense. They are also a good source of information about other local alternative lifestyle services, such as yoga, counseling, etc. I will definitely return to Inner City Hot Tubs when I return to Portland.
