Larsen's Beach - go beyond the end of the photo for nudity.

My wife and I spent Christmas vacation, 2008, on the island of Kauai. This is my report on the beaches we visited.

We were able to spend time at the following beaches: Secret, Larsen's, Aliomanu, and Kekaha Beach Park. We were able to be nude at Larsen's and Aliomanu.

We only visited Secret Beach once. The hike down was treacherous due to the fact that the island had received a lot of rain prior to our visit and the path was very muddy. When we did make it to the beach and walked all the way down to the right, as advised, we found only a few other groups, all in bathing suits. Since we had more rain during our visit, we did not return.

Although rather deserted, Kekaha Beach Park, on the west shore just south of Barking Sands, was not conducive to nudity due to the four-wheel drive vehicles cruising up and down the sands. Speaking of Barking Sands, it was not accessible due to heightened security and the close proximity of the missile base.

Polihale State Park had been recommended to us as a good beach for nudity due to its sheer size, but it was closed due to the extremely muddy conditions of the access road. In fact the gate was locked!

Aliomanu Beach was wonderful in spite of the fact that there is a house overlooking the beach. We were able to be nude without hassle and never saw any activity at the house. If you go all the way to the left (north) it is possible to be out of view of the house. There were a few suited snorkelers but they did not bother us.

Our favorite nude beach was Larsen's. Again, we were virtually alone most of the time but one day there were several other nude couples on the beach as well. Go all the way to the end of the path and continue to the left (north) on the beach for the best spots for nudity. We plan to visit Larsen's again next Christmas.

Be advised that the weather can be a major factor for beach goers during December. We only had four or five days when it was even possible to be on a beach. Patience and a flexible schedule help out. Also, we stayed in Kapaa which is centrally located so if it was raining on the north shore, we went to the west. Of course, the fact that Polihale State Park was closed did not help.

Overall we had a wonderful time and plan to return next year. We will probably give Secret Beach and Polihale another chance if the mud is not too deep and definitely return to Larsen's.
