Rock Haven Lodge, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Report

Spring 2002.

This is a very nice medium sized park located about 7 miles SE of Murfreesboro, TN. It is an easy day trip from here to Nashville, Chattanooga, Lynchburg (Jack Daniel's Distillery) and the Saturn and Nissan Automobile Plants which both offer tours.

George and Nancy are the gracious owners of this park. It is mostly 'regulars' but they have some spaces for transient RVers and folks with tents. We had a very nice site with full hook-up and picnic table right beside the office---very central to everything. We were at Rock Haven over Memorial Day and stayed for a total of 12 days. It is definitely one of the nicer parks we have visited.

They have a nice medium sized pool which is unheated and really only suitable for penguins and polar bears this early in the season. Also a nice hot tub which we used. The park is unique in that it has a narrow gauge (semi toy) railroad complete with crossing lites and a neat trestle that was in the final stages of completion during our stay. The track runs around a good part of the park and it surely has to be a hit with the kids. They also have a very good track for radio controlled racing cars. Many of the members have cars and we saw a three heat race during our stay. It was a lot of fun to watch and there were lots of spectacular crashes, but the little cars just recovered and kept on going and going and going. It's sure a lot wilder than the more sedate radio controlled sailboats we use at the Cove and at Como.

The members of Rock Haven take darts and volleyball very seriously and they have excellent facilities for both. The dart area includes a snack bar which serves on weekends and is sort of a central gathering point. There is also a asphalt tennis court, petanque, horseshoes, shuffleboard and a walking trail. They have a restaurant that serves breakfast and dinners on weekends.

The park is nicely landscaped and kept very clean--the bath house is new and immaculate. The residents have done a great job of keeping their sites and trailers neat and tidy--this is definitely not a trailer trash nudist park!! Lots of golf carts here as the regulars go from their trailers to the various venues in the park.

They also have an ice machine which we really appreciated and an honor system country store with lots of necessities and some country crafts. Sadly there was no modem hookup available, but understandable with the small number of transients here. They have a nice club house with pool table and other amenities. Rock Haven also has several cabins and park model trailers for rent. We looked in one of the cabins and it was very nice.

We especially enjoyed our day trips to the Saturn Plant and to Lynchburg. In addition to the Jack Daniel's operation, be sure to visit the Pepper Patch in downtown Lynchburg and try some of the tipsy cakes laced with Jack Daniel's.

If I was to pick a park for a home park outside of Florida, Rock Haven would be on my short list. The people at Rock Haven were very cordial but didn't go out of their way to welcome this transient nudist couple into their midst--typical of many parks we are finding. I would have loved to give Rock Haven a 3 on my rating scale of 0 to 3, but the unheated swimming pool and the lack of a full and embracing welcome knocks them down to a 2+. Nevertheless I highly recommend this park to everyone who visits middle Tennessee. We'll be going back I am sure. If you visit, be sure you have complete directions--the road in is not too well marked and we got lost and had to call for directions.
