August 1998
About half way between Nashville, Tennessee, and Knoxville, Tennessee, along I-40, is Timberline Lodge Resort. Timberline is located about 10 miles west of Crossville high up on the Cumberland Plateau.
Timberline started life in 1965 as a Co-Op club. In the start, the Members leased the land from the Owner. For years it only included a lake, manmade beach, camp sites, 3-4 trailers and a well. About 1988, the land owner was retiring and moving from the area and wanted to sell. With a close vote of the Membership, the club and land was sold to Glen and Bea Terry. Glen and Bea were already members and were ready to continue to the development of the Club. They have added a multi room Lodge (The TreeTop Inn) - with the Sun Bun Bar, an in ground pool, a hot tub, about 10 Chalet's a Bath House, A Club house (which features a weekly Sat night dance most of the year), many camper hookups, a large office (The Depot - with gift shop open to the public), etc.
My visit started by calling on Friday to get a room reserved in "The Lodge". Answering the phone was Wendi, who runs the Depot(office) Wed-Sun. The Depot is a former Railroad depot moved to the front "gate" area on US 70. It houses Timberlines office and a gift shop. The office is usually open during the day only. If you are arriving after 5pm, Wendi will reserve your space and advise you of her daily "hiding" place for your Key Card to get in the front gate. I arrived about 11pm on Sat. and picked up my Key Card from Wendi. She told me that they had a pretty good number of Day Visitors for Sat. If you're a day visitor, you can stay until 5pm - extra charge for staying later.
Driving in, I passed the Volley Ball court and found the usual lively Sat. Game already in full Swing. I had room 8 - upstairs in the lodge (hint - Don't get rooms 1, 6 or 7 - they are located near the entrances and can be noisy in the mornings). The lodge has two floors with common bathrooms at the end of the halls. Most folks, though, just go across the pool area and use the Bath house. There are 3 showers on the outside and this is a very popular conversation area. Around the pool was a modest crowd of about 50 people. (The grounds at Timberline are heavily covered in Timber and at times this can block the sun at the pool. Get a place early - Friday evening is the best time to stake out a chair!).
There are perhaps 50 campers permanently parked at Timberline and one that is a must to visit is that of Warren. Warren is the unofficial "Mayor of Timberline". He has been coming to Timberline since 1969, during his college days. Each weekend - March thru Nov. he is sitting on his front porch. (You won't find him there during Cold weather - in his words "I'm a Nudist, not Stupid!".) Warren acts like the welcome wagon - he will take any new comer in and tell them about Timberline and Nudism. Warren also dispenses his own brand of whit and wisdom. With Warren you will find his companion "Buckwheat", an 11 yr old black Chow / Malamute. Buckwheat usually can be found under the table at Warren's feet or on real hot days - under the Deck of Warrens Camper. He is probably the most mild mannered animal you can imagine.
After a visit with Warren, I went down to the Volley ball court. A Lively afternoon series of games was starting with 6 people on each team. Volley Ball at Timberline is a fun game. They do not take the game too serious or try to get too competitively. Anyone is welcome to play regardless of their abilities. Don't ask which team won because each time a game is finished and a break is taken, new teams are chosen and the new game begins. Down at the lake - there are several people on the sunning dock and someone has taken a canoe out to try their luck at fishing. No fishing license is needed here since it is a private lake on private land. There is also a small beach - but it is mostly unused - a relic of the past times before the pool. Timberline also has several miles of trails on the 150+ acres of land which can be hiked nude. Some are short and easy and some are rather hilly.
On Sat, Sun and Holidays you can get Connie or Sam(a female) to prepare lunch for you and serve it at poolside. Lunch consists of Hamburgers or Cheeseburgers. Also at the Sun Bun Bar is served Beer and Wine - Bring your own hard beverages. If you want a real treat, though, you will need to get dressed and go out the front gate - turn left - go 50 yards and turn right. Even though you are 10 miles out in the Country, you will find a real treat. The area is populated by Menonites and they run a store just up the road. They make some of the best sandwiches you will find anywhere. (And yes, Timberliners and the Menonites get along great! ) On Saturday nights and some Friday nights - Timberline has dances - which usually has a theme - this Saturday night was Toga night! True to form - a lot of the "usual" crowd came dressed the part. Warren even came in his "Toga" - It consisted of a towel (with Hank Williams, Sr on it) folded such that it looked more like a diaper - LOL. He said it was a Southern Italian Toga - much hotter in Southern Italy, therefore not the need for as large of a Toga. Of course, as the night wore on, most of the Toga's disappeared - This is a Nudist resort, you know. Usually there is a DJ but this Sat night, Glen did the honors. At the bar was Connie. Bea was there also - Sitting at the bar or dancing most of the night.
The dance broke up about 1230am and those that were left headed to the Campfire or the hot tub. I went to the Hot Tub and soon was in a deep discussion with someone new that I had just met. Soon we were joined by-a now off duty-Connie. Slowly everyone headed out - some to the campfire - to join about 10 others, and some like myself off to bed. The rooms in the Lodge come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some have one bed only, Some have a couch or day bed also, some have two beds and one has three walls of windows overlooking the pool. Sunday morning this week started slowly - complementary coffee and sweet rolls in the Sun Bun Bar and a few early risers at the pool. By noon most folks were awake and around the pool. The weather was just great this weekend with lots of Sunshine. A few early games of Volley Ball were played but mostly everyone just stayed at the pool. The Temp got into the 90's but the water temp was still low. Most folks just jumped in and got right back out. Remember Timberline is located on the Cumberland Plateau at about 1800ft.
As the afternoon past most folks left and by the time I left at 5pm, there were about 20 people left on the grounds - Some were about to start cooking "Supper" for a member's mother who was coming to visit. This weekend was really kinda slow - mostly because the following weekend is Labor day and there will probably be several hundred people coming to visit. A lot of people are already resting up for the big weekend to come. More info on Timberline can be found on their web site or by calling 1-800-TAN-NUDE.
By the way - I mentioned the Menonites store. This area has a large Menonite population. It also is home to another Nudist Club - The Cherokee Lodge. It is located just 2 miles from Timberline. This just goes to show that two groups which in other places have not been able to live together in peace, here are great neighbors.
