o Abbott's Glen Naturist B&B, Jacksonville, Report. 2005. Finally! A nice nude place to stay overnight near The Ledges nude beach in summer and right in the heart of Southern Vermont ski country. Year round hot tub and cozy lodging. 50 acres with 1000 feet of frontage on North River. Great foliage viewing. Cross country skiing and skating in winter. Major ski areas are only half an hour away. We really hope Amy & Lindy Abbott succeed. Please give them our best. Abbott's Glen. Amy & Lindy Abbott. 3552 Vermont Rt 112, Jacksonville, Vermont 05342. 802-368-2525. o Brockways Mills Gorge Report. 2004. Directions: From Exit 6 on Rt. 91 north of Bellows Falls, Green Mountain State, go northwest for 4 mi. on Rt. 103. Go Right 0.2 mi. at Brockways Mills sign. Park on Right after railroad tracks. Follow paths on the Rt. 103 side of the tracks down into the gorge. NJOY! Rating: FOUR MOONS! PLUS. Report: Another WORLD GUIDE CLASS Vermont Jewel, we'd been trying to find time to visit this one for years. Fifty lashes with a wet bathing suit for waiting so long. With a long history of nude use, this geological phenomenon on the Williams River has cliffs nearly 100 feet high, many potholes, waterfalls, and cascades, clear water, pools of any depth, small sandy beaches, good sun alignment, great fishing, no litter or gawkers--help keep it that way, please. Free camping at the bottom of the gorge. There's a small, interesting hydro power plant at the head of the gorge almost directly under the town road bridge. From the parking area, one can reach the gorge via a trail on the north side of the tracks, just before the railroad bridge, or by crossing the railroad bridge and walking right, into the woods. Other nuding possibilities downstream, accessible from the paved road 2 mi. east that crosses the Williams River on the north side of Rt. 103. o Copper Canyon. 2004. Directions: From Rt 132 in South Strafford, Vermont, go South past Coburn's General Store; don't turn Left on 132. Go straight on Mine Rd. for 1.8 mi. Mine Road changes to dirt; go 0.2 mi. Go right on a woods road, past colorful slag piles on both sides. Turn right at 0.9 mi. just before an old logging header; follow 0.1 mi. to canyon. Report: This was a new one on us and was it ever pretty. A Naturist friendly real estate agent told us about it. It's for sale at a reasonable price. Wouldn't it be great if one of you readers could buy it and turn it into Nekkist Haven? And Coburn's General Store is one of the last of a dying breed. It has EVERYthing, including the Town Post Office and gasoline. If they don't have it, you don't need it... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Coventry Club and Resort Report. August 2000. Coventry Resort, Milton VT. New owners, a new name and an apparent change in attitude set the tone for this resort. Certainly not as fancy as the Florida resorts, but certainly welcoming, and, at $14 for a day visit, reasonable. No pool, but a beautiful lake with all the expected activities. Volleyball courts, trails, cabins and RV sites abound. No food service save for some vending machines. The new hot tub was being finished while I was there, and it is a beauty. The few patrons that were there were friendly as were the owners. They need to finish a few more upgrades, but I will definitely visit in the Spring to see what their labors bring over the off season. Thanks Irish for the report!
o Cunningham Cove, Lake Willoughby. 2004. Directions: Park smart at the South end of Lake Willoughby in Westmore, Green Mountain State, and walk West, past the beach nearest the highway to the second beach and cove. Be nude anywhere you find a spot you're comfortable with. Rating: Maybe 1 moon? If there are many sober nudes there, FAR fewer dogs, and the beach experienced a five hour downpour in the last 24 hours, maybe 3.75 or maybe even 5 moons... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Florence Quarries, Green Mountain State. 2004. Directions: From the center of Brandon, Vermont, go south on Rt 7 for 6.8 mi. Turn right on Kendall Hill Rd, the truck route to Florence; it has one small sign marking it as the truck route, but none telling it's name. Go 0.8 mi. Turn left on Florence Rd. Go 0.3 mi, bearing right at the fork. Go 0.1 mi, cross the tracks, and go 1 mile to an old farm. Just after the barn, bear right on a dirt road for 0.1 mi. Follow the trail at the cattle gate on the right for 0.2 mi. through the field. The quarries are on the right. There's also a small turnoff 0.1 mi. farther up the public road on the right and another trail leading in... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Huntington Gorge. 2004. HUNTINGTON GORGE, Jonesville, is a WORLD GUIDE class Naturist area with the longest nude section of any gorge we know of--a full mile long and then some. There's something for everyone at Huntington, from easy access areas where youngsters can enjoy the shallow water safely and naturally, to Class IV hiking down the steep sides to high cliffs for diving. In times of high water, one can shoot the Ntire length of the gorge in a raft or tube, but we wouldn't want to try it because we suspect the water would be FAR too cold. When the water's low it's quite warm, even by Vermont standards because the gorge enjoys good alignment to the sun even late in the day... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Irish Pond (AKA Eurich Pond) Report. 2005. We first read about this one long ago in the 80's version of Maggie & Jim Cunningham's VERMONT UNVEILED and were finally able to visit in 1997 while staying at the fabulous Punch Bowl just down the road. Only in Vermont could one find such a pristine pond within walking distance of high priced condos; a famous woman author with a novel recently on the Best Seller List frequently goes nude there... o The Ledges Report. 1999. As the leaves fell in the yard my thought was to rake them on this cool Autumn day. As I raked, a serpant hissed... "Ledges! Last chance! Nudebeach!" I abandoned the leaves and drove to Vermont. I saw my nakedness and was not ashamed. I was too cold to be! There were several cars there parked outside of the gate but all being careful to leave a 12 foot emergency vehicle passage and not to infringe on neighbors by blocking sideroads. There was no ticketing or towing that I know of and I trust that the Wilmingon police have better thing to do as long as parking doesn't become problematic.... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.) 1999.
o The Ledges (1998) in southern Vermont (VT) is a mile long recreation area of flat rocky outcroppings along the rugged northeastern shore of the Harriman Reservoir. It is arguably the premier "inland" naturist site in all of New England... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Little Rock Pond, Green Mountain State Report. 2004. Directions: From Rt. 7 in Danby, Vermont, go east, on National Forest Highway 10 entering the Little Branch Brook section of the Green Mountain National Forest. Go for 2.8 miles on this very steep and very winding road to the Big Branch Brook Picnic Area; park, shed unhealthy clothes as soon as you choose, and take The Long Trail north for 2.5 mi. to Little Rock Pond. Enjoy! Rating: This is Vermont Natural Recreation at it's best--5 Moons! Report: Little Rock Pond, Wallingford, Vermont is tough to reach, but it's well worth the effort. Camping-Trail Shelters for the occasional August snowstorm, total peace and quiet, magnificent vistas, nude hiking, free camping for up to 14 days, and crystal clear waters. Here, the Ranger's lady friend joins the Ranger in clothes free swimming in the pristine pool below a huge rock formation. No facilities of any kind except outhouses; bring what's needed. o Lye Brook Falls Wilderness Area Report. 2005. We were wondering which area would end up with the honor of being #100 and we're truly glad it's Lye Brook Falls, a National Wilderness Area where in 1989, we wrote the story of the Rochester Topfree Ten, N 9.2, p.62 & 65-68. Located within the Green Mountain National Forest, Lye Brook just has to be the nude area closest to the center of a major town that we know of--Manchester, with all its famous shops and restaurants, along with supermarkets, cinemas, and fuel/service is less than 2 miles away! What a neat setup; we can do whatever shopping we need; less than 10 minutes later, we can be nude beside the crystal clear potable roaring waters of Lye Brook, camping for FREE for up to 14 days! (On second thought, The Cornfields may be closer to Brattleboro, but there's no camping there, and Lye Brook is a nicer area.)... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Mad River Punch Bowl Report. 2004. Directions: From Rts 100 and 17 in Irasville, Vermont, take 100 South for 2.7 mi. On the right is a private driveway, then an open field. At the north end of the field, 0.3 mi. north of the steel bridge over Mad River and a General Store, follow the tracks into the field. Walk left to the river. Report: Site of the wonderful NLI Reunion III, this place can be the best of the best of THE BEST = gawkers and sexpreds are nearly non-existent due to a caring core group, the fact it's privately owned, and the fact that the Naturist owners and Naturist caretaker are frequently there. Elevation 1,133 ft. Please leave a donation with David the Caretaker or owners Laurie Maguire or Duke Freeman. o Rock River Gorge Report. 2005. Rock River Gorge in the Williamsville hamlet of the town of Newfane, The Green Mountain State, is one beautiful place--the crystal clear potable waters of the Rock River have taken millennia to carve out a series of 4 pools, each used by a distinctive interest group in harmony with Dame Nature because each pool is separated by a distance of more than 200 yds, as well as several feet in elevation, making each invisible from any others. In past years, the lowest pool (and the biggest, best one) was used by clothes-mindeds and sometimes by rowdy, beer bottle breakers. This has changed considerably--see below... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Stratton and Bourn Ponds, Green Mountain State. 2004. Directions: From the Daniel Webster Memorial Acre in the Green Mountain, Vermont National Forest, either drive to the end of Branch Pond Road and hike north for 1.9 mi. to Bourn Pond or park at the well marked crossing of the Long and Appalachian Trails 1.7 mi. west of The Acre and hike 3 mi. north to Stratton Pond. A litter free area with your help. Rating: Five Moons And Then Some... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o Tollgate Falls. 2004. We're compunuding this from just across the road; see Lye Brook Falls. Ah, Vermont! "With a free beach in every other town", we used to say; some towns have MORE than one nude area, and quaint Manchester is one of many so blessed. We're wondering at this point just how many totally accepted natural spots we'll come up with in The Green Mountain State before the Nomad Odyssey no longer lives; between NUDISK I and II, we currently have a total of 36 areas and the list grows all the time. Next to Lye Brook, also in Manchester, Tollgate Falls on Bromley Brook (of ski area fame, also home to the world's oldest and longest Alpine Slide for which Bromley has a patent; they also have a LONG water slide), Tollgate Falls is the nude area closest to the center of a major town that's known to we Nomads. Thinking of it now, compuNuding at SUNAIR HEALTH CLUB in blissful nude peace, hearing the songs of dozens of birds, if walking time were taken into consideration, Tollgate Falls would probably be as close to Manchester as Lye Brook Falls, but the point is hardly worth debating; the plain, glorious truth is that Vermont is a skinnydipper's PARADISE!... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
o West River At South Londonderry Report. 2005. For years, we'd guessed there was a nude swimming area on the West River here; in fact, we predicted it back in '89, based on what we saw on a brochure we found on the other side of the river at Ball Mountain Dam--see 094WestRiver. Much to our surprise, that brochure prohibited nude bathing; the prohibition was so totally UN Vermont-like, we surmised the rule must have been put in place to protect the resident skinnydippin' population from gawkers, preverts, and postverts. Said we at the time, "the regulations prohibited "Nude Swimming", but we very, VERY HIGHLY DOUBT that it's enforced more than 100 yds. (or feet, probably) from the public area." It makes us feel good to know our guess was, in fact, an educated, correct one. Having now logged 17 Summers of nuding Vermont, we feel we have a reasonable knowledge of the unique state of mind that Vermont is... (click preceding link to read the rest of the report.)
