Rio's in London, England
July, 1999I went on a Friday night to early Saturday AM. Fairly crowded but not overcrowded. One big change I noticed-- the woman bartender behind the counter was not topless like they always have been in the past. Also, the manager helped out with tending bar, handing out towels, etc. The non-alcoholic drinks were all free. Another change to the facility: the sauna room nearest the hot tub and across from the cold dipping pool (which I've never braved, and few ever do) now has a dark plexiglass window-- on the side facing the hot tub--and the door also is also made of the same dark plexiglass.
The weight/excercise room on the other side of the big pool (well, not so big really), has more equipment. People still go into those rooms mostly to sleep on the big lawn chairs. The rest is the same. As I said, the highlight was the massage. They do Swedish, Shiatsu and some other kind of Oriental stuff-- I've been told you get walked on or something. There was a set of stairs that led upstairs from a smallish lounge area near the reception area-- and up there there are about 3-4 small rooms with private massage tables for couples. I did not see anyone go up there this time and I wonder if they have just closed it off.
Many wear bathing suits, the rest, like me just have towels. Unlike me, most everyone with towels never take them off in the sauna or steam rooms even. Very few people without clothes use the big pool. A few more use the big jacuzzi. I'm one of those people. I have yet to use the small hot tubs.I've noticed very few women who wear only towels, and even some of those have a thong bottom. Very few black people or even very few non-white people wear towels only. This time, there were about 2-3 black men and one black woman who wore towels--which is the most I've ever noticed--there have probably been that many naked black men and women the other 3 times I have been there combined. 3 Oriental women this night were the same way. I've often wondered about this --do you notice in things like H&E, AANR year books--with photos from clubs all over the place-- have few non-white people. And when they do, very few take off their clothes any time. (And there were more non-white people at Rio's this time by far than at any time at all-- not that I care). Why is this-- that non-whites don't go naked? Are they shy? Are they from older civilizations, so they don't have a sociological need to shed their clothing? I just don't know.
Anyway, its not that I'm the lone crazy American parading around naked the whole time--I just take the towel off in the pool, jacuzzi and those real hot steam and sauna rooms--and there are those that do the same. I have rarely seen anyone be naked more of the time, but it does happen--and only men. Many times I'm the only one in them--and in the steam rooms--you may remember--the steam is so thick that you can barely make out if someone is 2 feet away, really.
Basically, unless the 2 or 3 masseusses there that are real talented aren't there, I don't think I intend to go there. Had someone different this time, who was also real good in getting the knots in the shoulders and back out. We were talking about the places that Rio's tries to emulate--the spas in Germany for instance--and how Rio's misses the mark.
On the other hand, the going from hot dry to hot steam to pools to jet-stream jacuzzi's do wonders to muscles and to stress.
