Touring the UK.
1999
This summer I had the opportunity once more of traveling for business and being able to use my time off to explore the naturist parts of the UK.
I did not get to many beaches since I either didn't feel like walking the distance to see an empty beach (most of my time off was during the weekdays) or it was raining or overcast or wet in some way or another. There is also lots of good reports about the beaches by surfing the pages of the British Naturist Pages which you can get to from with Netnude.
The one beach I did manage to get was in Brighton and my main reason for making a special trip there was that it was a sanctioned beach on behalf of the city and very close to the populated main beach and so I wanted to find out more. The day I went, it was anything but a beach day, but if you were to go there my only suggestion is to take a well padded towel with you. I could not imagine lying on the stones (almost rocks) all day. And if the wind is up you may consider taking your surfboard as well.
Now on with my excursions or what I did in nude Britain. Upon arriving in Exeter I sought out an H&E magazine to see what was in the local area for nudists. I already done all my surfing from the net prior to going and new of nothing other than beaches in the area and had no time to seek them out. Unfortunately I did not find a club that I could attend either in the area but there were a few.
I knew I would be stationed out of the Leeds/Bradford area for my main stay and so once there and checked into a hotel I started making some phone calls again about clubs. Well, no clubs in the area that were not an hours drive or more and by this time I was filled with my hotel stay and knew Britain's B&B's were a popular item, and so started inquiring. From the regional map I had, there was only one that I could stay at that was within a reasonable distance to and from work and of course made the phone call. (Note: the place Ron stayed is no longer a naturist Bed and Breakfast so I'm removing it from the report)
While in the UK I had an opportunity to visit Rios in northern London, a great place at any time of the day after 11:00 am, 2 sauna's, 2 jacuzzi's, 1 large whirl pool, and one smaller swimming pool. An all you want to drink & cookie bar (non-alcoholic), and exercise room, and a garden to lie around in all in the heart of the city. I traveled there by train and very easy to get to. Depending on how your getting around the city, I would suggest that you give them a call and ask which train station would be the best since there are two very close by. I got off at the Kentish Town Station, asked someone if I should go right or left and he advised left and without any difficulty I found the place. Stayed until closing at 7:00 am and then proceeded onto the airport for my flight home.
I returned for a 2nd time to the UK 14 days later and without delay checked into the B&B in Shipley once more. Stayed with Sarah, Roger, Dale and guests for a further 2 weeks and then had to go to Ireland for the duration.
Because my job took me from Cork where I was based for my job and Birmingham where I was for my days off I had the opportunity to visit Silverleigh in the southern district of London on 3 different occasions. Silverleigh is a B&B and well worth the stay. They are all delightful hosts, thank you especially to Barry for keeping up at night talking about naturism in the UK vs the rest of the world. Other than the great hospitality you will find and indoor swimming pool, 2 jacuzzi's (one lie in, the other you sit), a steam room and a sauna (all under one roof), a snack bar/mini restaurant and a very nice garden to lie around in and enjoy those few rays of sunshine Britain has to offer. I think I saw maybe a dozen in total during my 9 weeks there! And they told me they were having a great summer weather wise! I must admit, I am fond of one phrase I heard several times, "if you don't like the weather, stick around an hour".
The rooms at Silverleigh are OK, certainly not the Hilton, but you do get a TV that works, a comfortable bed and like I said, great hospitality. Of course if you are staying overnight and are a connoiseur of alcoholic beverages I should warn you, they don't have a license to sell any so..... since they don't care, what you do is.... bring your own and maybe a bit to share with those around that may not know this little secret. I didn't find out on my first visit until I was well covered in the water, but I think I made up for it on my 2nd and 3rd.
