The History

Welcome to the World Wild Web............

Jan has asked me to update this introduction - she might not know much about tortoises (tho I hope she has increased her awareness of this genus since we began our correspondence some 6 years or so ago) but she is a hard taskmaster when it comes down to being truthful. Not that I've been telling fibs (would I ?? Nah !!) but things have moved on a little since Jan first gave me a space on her web site.

So I now have to tell you that this page comes to you courtesy of 1 person (me), one parrot (Morgan), one tortoise (Curry), seven Newts and 2 frogs.

Morgan

Our outpourings still come from the SW UK but I have to admit that it's not always been from the same exact geographical location. When this page first began (inadvisedly I suspect), we lived just a couple of miles from the M5 on the Somerset/Devon borders. We then moved to a place in North Devon (this was the era of hosting lots of English Language students !) and after 12 months there, we decided to make another move. This didn't work out too well but did encompass 6 months in Wales before finally moving back to the SW UK about 10 months ago. Just in case you are all getting excited about us having found "our place", I should add here that we are currently looking to buy a place in Mainland Europe - France (tho we have done this before) or maybe Spain.

It's perhaps not now accurate to ascribe this Page to a History of Tortoises because my tortoises are all now out on permanent breeding loan except for my Indian star "Curry" who remains with me as she has done for the last 28 years. (as a little note of interest, she is , I believe, the oldest Indian Star tort in captiivity in the UK or at least the one who has been kept in the UK for the longest period of time - they tend to be a little difficult to keep.) . Yes, you're right...........as a non naturist, Curry's antecedants and history have absolutely nothing to do with this page. Sorry !!

I've been thinking about giving up on the Snail racing and going in for Wood Lice instead. I feel that I may get a bit more return on this (see current write up) - could be wrong but I think Wood Louse racing has a lot going for it.

As for me - well, to be honest I am wondering whether it would be a good idea idea to settle down in one place (after all, there's only so many bathrooms I can tile and gardens I can renovate !!...{and all the rest }) OTOH, we've only been here for 10 months so this broody sort of feeling could pass. I am now working for the National Trust at a local "historic pile" and have also embarked upon a training course with a community Citizens Advice Bureau. In my spare time, I am a Trustee for a local housing project, Secretary for the local community council, etc, etc, --------shame really isn't it ? It won't last - I will be found out before too long mainly because I still keep flipping thru the property guides and find it hard to resist moving on.

Oh yes, one other thing (which will hopefully excuse this page for the next 12 months) ....... this year is pretty significant for me - my 50th birthday - August - (the 8th if anyone is thinking of sending me a congratulatory mail <VBG>). It feels quite odd really - I look around at some of my contempories (that doesn't look right but the spelling is correct) and we seem to be on a different planet - I don't *feel* 50 (well, yes, alright, I'm not 50 just yet but you know what I mean) - I've thought about getting to this stage over the last couple of years but still haven't sussed it out. I don't feel like 50, I don't behave like 50, I maybe look like 70 given a good light <VBG>. <hopefully> but half a century ?? No way !!

OK folks that's the update for this year - for the *real* history of this Page, you will have to consult Jan - or at least her expertise in dragging up old history.
